Film Junk Premium Podcast #43: A Nightmare on Elm Street

How’s this for a wet dream? Halloween is just around the corner and with the recent passing of Wes Craven it was time for us to take a look at the one major ’80s slasher franchise we still had not yet covered: A Nightmare on Elm Street. We did our best to avoid falling asleep through all six of the original Elm Street films plus Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and the ultimate horror villain match-up Freddy vs. Jason. Our spirited discussion broaches plenty of topics including the origin of Freddy’s glove, the gay subtext in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, our favourite Freddy one-liners, and of course, the fairly inconsistent rules of the dream world. So is the A Nightmare on Elm Street theme truly iconic or is it just forgettable? Is the meta New Nightmare a work of genius or is it a cheap rip-off of The Exorcist? Which Film Junk member once dressed up as Freddy Krueger for Halloween? Lend us your ear and download this month’s premium podcast below.

Thanks guys! I’ve really been looking forward to this one. More suggestions:
    Coen Brothers
    Akira Kurosawa
and I always have a faint hope of a Mel Brooks premium.

  • Derek

I’ve been looking forward to this all week. I kept checking my emailing waiting for that notice from Band Camp. Downloading it now… Two suggestions for future premiums: the Saw franchise and a “Movie Show Premium”. I think someone on the Reddit thread suggested a Classic Disney animation for the “Movie Show Premium”.

  • Bandit Manatee

That Dokken song from part 3 kicks ass. Probably my favorite thing from this franchise. Been watching a lot of the others for the first time and have to say Freddy’s Dead has to be the worst sequel from any of these classic horror franchises

  • Tommy

How about getting slightly out of the comfort zone historical? French New Wave? 70’s New Hollywood?

  • Puzzy Cutz

There is a kickstarter documentary project about the 2nd film called, “Scream, Queen! My Nightmare On Elm Street” that is supposedly going to dig into who knew what, when, about the script. It seems weird, though, because the topic seems pretty well picked clean already, but maybe it will be interesting to die hard fans.

  • Reed Farrington

Since, on the Film Junk crew, I’m the only Woody Allen fan, I should do a solo premium podcast in which I expound on Allen’s existentialist views and our common anhedonia, which explains why I hate every film I see.

You could debate with yourself in 3rd person, much in the same way he does. Possibly include an imagined construct of William Shatner, offering sporadic words of encouragement (Play It Again, Sam).

  • LordAwesome

That’s why you’re the best, Reedy.

  • Bandit Manatee

    Tarantino for December?

Also at some point Kubrick would be awesome.

  • Dani Smithers

Sorry guys, probably my least favorite premium next to The Matrix one. While the Matrix premium wasn’t good because it was almost all negative criticism, this premium wasn’t that great because of the subject matter and it had to be rushed to get through all the movies. I’m still looking forward to the next one :)

  • Gordzila

I was so disappointed that Jay and Frank did not say mongoloid when describing Jason. Easily one of my favorite premium moments ever from the Friday the 13th episode.

  • Tomas Akhonen

Great episode! Made me want to rewatch all off these iconic movies hehe.

  • Reed Farrington

That’s a great idea! Too bad I wouldn’t be able to coerce Jay into doing a Shatner impersonation.

  • Brittany Gresang

Nice podcast. I’m going to have to side with Jay that the Nightmare theme is classic.

Future Podcasts: Exorcist, Godfather, Jaws, Disney, Child’s Play, Karate Kid.

  • Sean

Sorry to disappoint Dani, but I agree that the quality tends to drop as the number of movies increase. We’re trying to keep them to a manageable number as much as possible.

  • Sean

We haven’t really talked about it but I would think a Coen Brothers premium might happen in February.

  • Sean

Tarantino is probably the most likely for December, hopefully we’ll finalize that soon.

  • Sean

    Thanks for the suggestions Brittany.

The Exorcist premium is already available right here:

  • Brittany Gresang

  • Sam

That’s awesome. It’s kinda hard to pick a bad lineup for a Coen premium, but I’m crossing my fingers that Barton Fink makes the cut. Would love to hear that discussed.

It being the only one of the Coens films not readily available in North American blu-ray might be a strike against it though unfortunately.

  • Samb

Most enjoyable, gents. Ronee Blakely swanning about as the mom in the original was a highlight for me, as was Clu Gulager’s drunk Darrin McGavin impression in the second one.

  • ChrisJPN

Great show; thanks, guys. Would also recommend listening to the We Hate Movies podcast episode on Freddy vs. Jason.

As much as I’d love to hear the suggested Tarantino/Coen/Kubrick/Disney podcasts, Brittany’s Karate Kid suggestion below is fantastic.

  • Dwight Gabadon

Will you guys take donations to stop Frank from commentating on all Horror movies from here until the end of time. I will pay whatever it takes, please.
