Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Martian Sticks Around, Pan Gets Panned

boxofficemartian2

While some of us were stuffing our faces with mashed potatoes over the Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada, Mark Watney’s potato farming skills continued to thrill audiences as The Martian topped the box office for the second weekend in a row. The movie added another $37 million to its domestic total, dropping just 32% from the previous weekend, which puts it on pace to outgross Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (among other films). Hotel Transylvania 2 also held strong in second place, bringing in another $20 million thanks to continued support from family audiences. Speaking of which, Joe Wright’s Pan apparently failed to connect with family audiences and turned out to be a big disappointment for Warner Brothers, pulling in just $15.5 million on an estimated $150 million budget. Hugh Jackman’s star power was no match for the poor reviews and lacklustre word of mouth. The Intern remained in fourth place while Sicario dropped to #5. Meanwhile, Universal may have yet another hit on their hands as Steve Jobs opened to one of the best per-theatre averages of the year (granted, it opened on just four screens). It will be interesting to see what happens as it expands in the coming weeks.

1. The Martian — $37M
2. Hotel Transylvania 2 — $20.3M
3. Pan — $15.53M
4. The Intern — $8.66M
5. Sicario — $7.35M
6. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials — $5.25M
7. The Walk — $3.65M
8. Black Mass — $3.13M
9. Everest — $3.03M
10. The Visit — $2.42M

I saw Pan, it wasn’t as bad as they say. No way it was a great movie, but it was alright.

So better than Hook but not as good as PJ Hogan’s Peter Pan?
