Seth Grahame-Smith in Talks to Direct The Flash Movie

With the second season of The Flash premiering this week on The CW, Warner Brothers has taken the opportunity to drop some big news regarding their upcoming feature film based on the Scarlet Speedster as well. Up until now, the only info we really had about The Flash movie was that Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk About Kevin) was attached to star and that Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie) had written a treatment for the film. There had been some speculation that they might step up to direct it as well, but they clearly have way too many projects on their plate right now. So instead, the studio has opted to hand it off to Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter writer Seth Grahame-Smith. Hit the jump for more details.

According to THR, Seth Grahame-Smith is in negotiations to write and direct The Flash for Warner Brothers. Ezra Miller will play Barry Allen, the second incarnation of the character and also the one most widely recognized, who will be introduced in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before taking on a bigger role in Justice League: Part 1. The Flash solo movie is scheduled to be released after that on March 23rd, 2018.

Seth Grahame-Smith is best known for writing the genre mash-up novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, the latter of which was brought to the big screen by Timur Bekmambetov. Grahame-Smith wrote the screenplay for that movie and then went on to do script work on several other Warner Brothers movies including Dark Shadows, and The Lego Batman Movie plus Beetlejuice 2 and the Gremlins reboot. This will be his first time behind the camera, although he directed several episodes of the MTV series The Hard Times of RJ Berger. Do you think Seth Grahame-Smith is a good choice to direct The Flash?

I don’t think you should bother posting these anymore. The days of exciting directors like Raimi or Nolan directing comic book movies are long gone. You’re just posting about another guy no one has heard about or cares about who is just going to be a hired gun doing what the Marvel/DC factories want.

Whether they are known or not, good or not, this is still a big project that a lot of people care about. And if you ask me, it’s pretty interesting to compare this to Marvel’s recent director announcement to see how yet again Warner Brothers is failing to generate any excitement at all for their comic book movies.

The only time I was ever excited about a Marvel director announcement was Branagh for THOR and then the movie came out and his influence was so watered down it might as well have been directed by Ron F-ing Howard.
