Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Martian Lands Just Short of October Record

After the dust has settled on the weekend’s events, it looks as though The Martian will have fallen just shy of the October opening weekend record which currently held by Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity. With an estimated $55 million, The Martian was still a huge success for 20th Century Fox and it marked the second highest debut ever for both Ridley Scott and Matt Damon. In second place, Hotel Transylvania 2 had another strong weekend, earning $33 million, while Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario jumped up to #3 after expanding nationwide. The Intern and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere, Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk failed to repeat the IMAX success of Everest, pulling in just $1.5 million from 448 screens. Perhaps it will pick up steam next weekend when it moves beyond IMAX theatres.
