What We Do in the Shadows Director in Talks for Thor: Ragnarok

Over the past few years, Marvel has developed a reputation for hiring less experienced (read: less expensive) directors for their movies instead of well known A-listers, but in doing so they’ve actually taken some chances on a handful of interesting filmmakers. Jon Favreau and Joss Whedon were not really proven names when they were brought on board for Iron Man and The Avengers; meanwhile James Gunn proved himself to be an inspired choice for Guardians of the Galaxy and Shane Black’s career has been revived thanks to Iron Man 3. Now this week we have news of a particularly unexpected choice to direct the next Thor movie. We are hearing that Kiwi director Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows, Eagle vs. Shark) is the man who will take the reins. But is he ready to take on a massive blockbuster of this magnitude?
According to The Wrap, Taika Waititi is currently in negotiations to direct Thor: Ragnarok for Marvel. He reportedly beat out Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), the other director who was in contention for the job. Thor: Ragnarok is currently scheduled for release on Nov. 3rd, 2017, following the release of Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Marvel’s currently untitled Spider-Man movie.
In addition to directing Eagle vs. Shark, Boy and What We Do in the Shadows, Waititi has directed episodes of Flight of the Conchords, The Inbetweeners and Super City. Clearly he has a lot of experience in comedy, which has served Marvel well in the past (ie. The Russo Brothers on Captain America: The Winter Soldier). That would seem to indicate that the next Thor movie will have plenty of humour, although with a title like Ragnarok you might think otherwise. What do you think, is Taika Waititi a great choice to direct Thor: Ragnarok?
