The Exorcist, Ace Ventura and Major League Remakes Under Consideration

It’s no secret that Hollywood has become pretty obsessed with remakes over the past decade or so, recycling previously successful properties in order to cash in on nostalgia and name recognition. Many of those remakes have come courtesy of MGM, a studio that was on the verge of bankruptcy in 2010 but started to exploit its back catalogue in order to get things back on track. Now it looks like we could have a similar situation on our hands with Morgan Creek Productions. The production company is looking to sell off the rights to its library of 78 films, and along with those rights will come the possibility of remakes. Morgan Creek will retain the remake rights to five movies, however: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Major League, Young Guns, Flying Tigers and The Exorcist. Morgan Creek CEO Jim Robinson had this to say:

“I’m selling the library strictly for economic reasons. It will go back into the company to fund more production. We have a number of properties that we are looking to move forward on.”

He went on to confirm that remakes of Major League, Ace Ventura and The Exorcist are already being discussed. The Exorcist in particular is a bit of a surprise; it was previously announced that a TV series based on The Exorcist was in development, a movie remake has never been mentioned. The Exorcist director William Friedkin is not too happy about the idea, although he doesn’t seem to think that Morgan Creek owns the rights to the original:

If he is right, it sounds like they could only remake The Exorcist sequels, which makes no sense at all. Would you like to see any of these movies remade or should they all be left alone?
