Bryan Singer to Direct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

20000leagues

For years now we’ve been hearing rumblings about a potential new adaptation of Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Back in 2009, McG was going to direct a new version for Disney, but he eventually dropped out and was replaced by David Fincher. Fincher developed the movie for a while but ultimately could not agree on a cast that the studio was comfortable with. Around this time, Timur Bekmambetov also signed on to direct a competing project for Fox with Ridley and Tony Scott attached to produce. None of these movies ever saw the light of day. Now this week Bryan Singer has announced that 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea will be his next film. Here’s what he had to say on Instagram:

Given Bryan Singer’s relationship with 20th Century Fox, it seems safe to assume that he is reviving their version of the film, although the studio has not yet confirmed it. The script was apparently penned by Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney (the latter also co-wrote Singer’s Jack the Giant Slayer). No other details are available at the moment, although Singer promises he is not done with the X-Men franchise. Are you looking forward to a Bryan Singer-directed remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?

A proper big budget version of this could be good, if done well. I just have my doubts about it being done well. The newer version of The Time Machine was not good.

Could be good, but i fear the only good thing which comes out of the project is that 1954 Version gets the Blu Ray treatment. A “oldtimes” Burton or Del Torro would be my personal stars as a director for it.
