Pacific Rim 2 Reportedly Put on Hold Indefinitely

Today we’re cancelling the cancellation of the apocalypse. Last week we heard that Legendary Pictures was in the process of relocating their King Kong prequel Kong: Skull Island from Universal Pictures to Warner Brothers. The main reason being given was that they wanted to set up a new King Kong vs. Godzilla movie and that they needed both franchises under one roof to accomplish that. While that made sense, this week more information is coming out about Universal’s already strained relationship with Legendary. The situation has thrown some upcoming Legendary projects into question, including (unfortunately) Pacific Rim 2. Hit the jump for the full scoop.

The news comes from a recent article in THR that tries to explain the complicated partnerships between Legendary, Universal and Warner Brothers. They claim that Pacific Rim 2 “has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all).” This coincides somewhat with recent reports that production had been delayed until 2016, although it now sounds like the situation is even more dire.

What is confusing about the whole thing is the fact that Pacific Rim was a Warner Brothers film, but they decided to pass on the sequel. If Universal doesn’t want to do it, perhaps they will give it another look? Either way, it’s unfortunate that yet another Guillermo del Toro project may end up stuck in development hell. Do you think we’ll still eventually get a Pacific Rim sequel?

  • If true, this is sad news.

This just solidifies Pacific Rim as a one-shot classic.
