Although in the past Tom Cruise has been known for his multiple collaborations with directors like Tony Scott, Steven Spielberg and Cameron Crowe, these days he seems to be bouncing back and forth between his two new BFFs: Christopher McQuarrie and Doug Liman. Having just made Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation with McQuarrie, he is now shooting an ’80s-set drug thriller called Mena with Doug Liman. Cruise has also expressed interest in doing an Edge of Tomorrow sequel with Liman, but this week we have learned that they will likely be teaming up for a different sci-fi project in the near future. The movie is called Luna Park and Liman has been trying to get it off the ground for quite a while now. Hit the jump for more info.

According to Variety, Tom Cruise will partner with Doug Liman to develop his long-gestating sci-fi flick Luna Park for Paramount. Although Cruise is not yet officially attached to star, the hope is that he will come on board once a new draft of the script has been written. The plot is said to center on “a renegade group of former space employees, led by an Eastern European woman, who travel the world, stealing space equipment in an attempt to go back to the moon to acquire an energy source. The last item to steal — or in this case, kidnap — is an ex-NASA employee.”

Liman had previously set up the project back in 2011 with Chris Evans and Andrew Garfield circling lead roles, but it fell apart when co-financier Skydance Pictures pulled out due to a ballooning budget. Given Cruise’s relationship with Skydance, it is possible that they will get involved again, although nothing is confirmed at this time. No word yet on who might write the latest draft of the script, but Ken Nolan (Black Hawk Down), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days Of Future Past) and Dan Mazeau (Bruno) all made previous attempts.
