Ronda Rousey to Star in Road House Remake

Looks like yet another remake is going the gender swap route this week as MGM has just found an unexpected star for their previously announced update of Road House. The original 1989 film starred Patrick Swayze as a tough-as-nails bouncer hired to take out the trash at The Double Deuce, one of the roughest bars in Missouri. It is still hailed as one of the most ridiculously macho, testosterone-driven movies of all time, so what better way to turn the remake on its head than to bring in a woman? MMA star Ronda Rousey has reportedly signed on to headline the remake. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Variety, current UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has signed to star in MGM’s Road House remake. Last we heard, Rob Cohen (xXx, The Fast and the Furious) was going to direct from a script by Michael Stokes (Exit Speed), however it appears that may no longer be the case. MGM is currently meeting with screenwriters and hopes to start production in 2016.

Thanks to Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters, it would seem that gender swapping is fast becoming an easy way for studios give their remakes a new twist. (The Logan’s Run remake was also recently suspected of doing the same.) However, it remains to be seen if these decisions are being made in the name of progress or if they are simply a marketing gimmick. Either way, I suspect that the idea of Ronda Rousey in the Patrick Swayze role should win over even the most ardent fans of the original Road House. Are you looking forward to a female-fronted version of Road House?

At least these gender swaps prevent a shot-for-shot pointless remake from happening. It forces them to update it in a slightly different direction and/or view. I haven’t seen any of these gender-swaps yet, as they’re all still in production, but I think this trend may be a winner, as far as remake trends go.
