Trainspotting Sequel Might Be Danny Boyle’s Next Movie

It’s no secret that Danny Boyle has been planning a Trainspotting sequel for quite a while now, but he has been patiently waiting for the right time to do it. Irvine Welsh, who wrote the original novel on which the movie was based, published a follow-up called Porno back in 2002. The story picks up ten years later with Sick Boy and Renton getting into the adult film business while Begbie is released from prison and looking to seek revenge. It has now been almost 20 years since the release of Trainspotting, but it sounds like Danny Boyle is finally ready to make the sequel his next film. Here’s what he had to say about it at the Telluride Film Festival:

“All the four main actors want to come back and do it… Now it is only a matter of getting all their schedules together which is complicated by two of them doing American TV series.”

The two actors in question are Jonny Lee Miller, who stars in Elementary, and Robert Carlyle, who has a recurring role on Once Upon A Time. Ewan McGregor has previously stated that he is on board for a sequel and I assume Ewen Bremner is also available. As for Kelly MacDonald, who played Diane in the original, I believe her character only makes a brief appearance in Porno so it is unclear if she will be involved.

Either way, the script has been written by John Hodge, who also wrote the first film along with several of Boyle’s other movies including Shallow Grave, The Beach, A Life Less Ordinary and Trance. It sounds like the movie will be called Trainspotting 2 as opposed to Porno for obvious reasons. Are you psyched for a Trainspotting sequel?

I loved the book and found it really funny. I really don’t know how it would work as a film though.

    Hmm. Sure. Why not?

I feel like he’s been saying this at least once a year since the book was published.
