    Fat City (1972) directed by John Huston is a little known but great boxing film. I’m also partial to Homeboy with Mickey Rourke and Christopher Walken.

    Really like this idea and hope you do more stuff like this in the future vastly more entertaining than reviewing something you guys are not excited about. Jay if you are reading this was antichrist ever in consideration for top ten? I could just have missed you mentioning it…. Art film but I remember some claiming it had horror elements when released

    Antichrist winds through different themes but it’s most definitely a horror.

    Horror elements for certain. Certainly going for shock at or above the level of under the skin. I just can’t remember if jay liked it or not.

    Reed gave a 2.5/4 stars on the Legend of the Fist: Chen Zen movie. Isn’t that the equivalent of at least 4/5 in regular world?

    I don’t agree that a sci-fi film can fall out of the genre as real scientific developments eventually catch up, surpass, or take different forms than what the film depicts. To me, the trappings of sci-fi, while often interesting in and of themselves, serve primarily to speak to human anxieties and aspirations, dramatize universal truths, and/or explore the logical extensions of whatever political climate existed at the time the movie was made. That stuff never goes away — as long as the movie contains significant elements of scientific futurism, it counts as sci-fi now and forever.

    All that said, great show and great lists! I wondered about Moneyball and Bridesmaids for the KoC’s list, and Hanna for the Md’M.

    Under The Skin would probably be #1 on my Sci-Fi and Horror lists. And Jay I have to agree about The Host. It’s a great film that fuses several genres but I have a hard time ranking it with other traditional Horror films.

    On another note, it’s interesting that all three of the #1’s came out in the same year (if we’re going by IMDb). Some might say it was a great year for genre films.

    This is the best episode for months! The vibe was strong, hilarious and insightful conversation, great lists. Jay in particular seemed on a roll and really enjoying the experience. Surprised The Babadook didn’t quite make it onto the list, but pleased Kill List did. But what about Berberian Sound Studio? Great episode!

    Jay’s list is pretty decent, although not having Martyr’s even in the honourable mentions was disappointing. I still don’t get internet’s love for It Follows and The Babadook.

    Frank, regarding the review of Southpaw, I too thought the way his daughter was reacting to him while she was in state custody was a bit out of hand, but I saw the movie with a bunch of friends, 2 of which have teenage daughters of their own. When I mentioned my thoughts on the daughter, they both told me that not having a child, I knew nothing, and that is almost exactly how children act when they are frustrated, confused, angry… you get the point. I liked the movie though, I thought Gyllenhaal was really good. You want that upper body, I hear he did 1,000 push ups a day, fuck that!

    To Jay….

    I wouldn’t have had a problem with seeing the horror tropes Prometheus plays around with to be lazy IF the rest of the movie didn’t deal with such heavy and serious ideas. That’s why those moments come off as a total cop outs and a product of lazy writing. You can’t have a movie centered on these serious topics and then have your characters act so dumb.

    It ends up creating a huge disconnect and makes me think it doesn’t even know what it wants to be: a serious and ambitious sci-fi film or a genre film working within its tropes.

    Frank is kind of crazy wanting Apple, Google, and Amazon to dominate digital video. Yes, UltraViolet is flawed – the user experience is convoluted. But, giving the keys to any one vendor is terrible. That is the one benefit to UltraViolet. You have the license separated from the content provider, which gives you options for which service you want to use to host and view your UltraViolet movies/shows on. If I go Frank’s route, I start purchasing movies on Apple. Then I have an incentive to start buying on Google. Now I’m split across two services and my library isn’t fully accessible. Worse, I go all in on one service and that service changes its terms in an unfavorable way. Guess what? All my movies/shows are locked up there. No chance to go somewhere else without re-purchasing everything. UltraViolet at least gets around that problem.

    Donnie Yen films probably would have dominated the list. All the mediocre Asian films I’ve seen recently are tainting my view. Actually, I haven’t seen very many Asian films.

    It’s not so much that anyone is needing to leave but it’s just Jay’s evil motivations at stirring the pot need a buffer and Greg was a good moderating presence.

    I don’t remember if I mentioned it on the show or not but I was not a huge fan of Moon. Wanted to revisit it before doing my list but never got around to it.
