Multiple Straight Outta Compton Spin-Offs in Development

Now that Straight Outta Compton has become the highest grossing musical biopic of all time, it’s no surprise that there are already a few related projects in development, looking to capitalize on its success. A Tupac biopic has been in the works for years now, and although director John Singleton dropped out back in April, it looks like the project is now moving forward with Carl Franklin (Out of Time, High Crimes). Last month we also heard that a Dogg Pound 4 Life movie might be happening, hoping to follow the events of Straight Outta Compton by tracking the careers of Snoop, Nate Dogg, Kurupt, Daz and Warren G. On top of that, there is now another Death Row Records movie currently being shopped around Hollywood. Hit the jump for more details.
According to THR, talent agency APA is currently putting together a package to shop around to studios under the name Welcome to Death Row. The movie would be based on the documentary and book of the same name by S. Leigh Savidge, who wrote the original draft of Straight Outta Compton and served as co-executive producer. This new movie would focus specifically on the rise and fall of Death Row Records and mastermind Suge Knight along with the careers of solo artists like Dre, Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur.
The project does not come with music rights attached, although it’s certainly possible that they could negotiate for them. The problem is that it sounds like many of the musicians are probably looking to set up their own movie, which means that Straight Outta Compton could be a hard act to follow. Either way, it seems unlikely that any of these projects will land at Universal or that any of the same cast members will be involved, which means that they will not be considered “official” sequels.
