Borderlands Movie in the Works

When the first trailers for Mad Max: Fury Road arrived online and in theatres last year, it was a little confusing for a whole generation of moviegoers who had never seen the original trilogy. Many of them were familiar with post-apocalyptic imagery through video games instead and some assumed that Mad Max was actually a rip-off of Fallout or Borderlands. Now that Fury Road has proven to be a hit, it seems to have re-opened the door for big budget films in a similar setting and studios are turning to video games for inspiration. First up: a Borderlands feature film. Hit the jump for more details.
According to Variety, Lionsgate is currently developing a big budget Borderlands movie with producers Avi and Ari Arad. The story takes place on the desert planet of Pandora (a name that James Cameron might take issue with) where a mega-corporation has set up mining settlements in order to search for advanced alien technology. While there is no actual apocalypse to speak of, the game takes place after the corporation has pulled out, abandoning the miners to fend for themselves amidst the barren wastelands and gangs of roving bandits.
Avi Arad made a name for himself producing many successful comic book movies including Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, but more recently he has moved to focus on video game adaptations like Uncharted and Mass Effect. Lionsgate has also been looking to get into video games after naming Nerdist Industries CEO Peter Levin their president of interactive ventures and games. Either way, they are promising that the movie will feature the “same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise.” Are you interested in a Borderlands movie?
