Sons of Anarchy Spin-Off in the Works

Although premium TV networks like HBO, AMC and FX have generally been smart about letting their most popular shows end when the time is right, that doesn’t mean they are willing to simply throw away the audiences that they have managed to build. Spin-offs can a great way to bring those viewers back, as AMC already proved earlier this year with their Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul. They also just launched a Walking Dead spin-off to run parallel to the original series and now this week FX is looking to get in on the game as well. The network is reportedly developing a spin-off for their most popular series to date, Sons of Anarchy, which just concluded after seven seasons back in December. But is it a story that is worth continuing?
According to Variety, Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is working with FX on a spin-off series about a different biker gang. The show would reportedly revolve around the Mayans, an Oakland-based Hispanic gang that deals in heroin, meth and prostitution. At the moment it is unclear what time period the show would be set in and also whether any prior cast members might be returning.
Sutter will not serve as showrunner but will executive produce since he is currently occupied with his new series Bastard Executioner, which debuts on FX on Sept. 15th. No doubt FX is hoping that many of his fans will tune in for that as well, but they are doubling down on that fanbase with the Sons of Anarchy spin-off. At the moment, FX doesn’t have many other hits on their hands aside from American Horror Story, so this is potentially a smart move for them. Would you watch a Sons of Anarchy spin-off focusing on the Mayans?
