Galaxy Quest TV Series Coming to Amazon

There is no shortage of TV shows based on movies out there right now including Fargo, Scream, From Dusk Till Dawn, 12 Monkeys and Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, just to name a few. And still more are scheduled to debut in the near future: Minority Report, Ash vs. Evil Dead, Westworld, Rush Hour, Limitless and Uncle Buck, for example, and the list just keeps on growing. This week Amazon has announced that they are also setting up another TV show based on a movie after missing the mark with their Zombieland pilot a few years ago. The movie that they have chosen to adapt is the 1999 sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest, which wasn’t a huge hit in theatres but certainly developed a huge cult following afterward. Hit the jump for more details.

According to EW, Amazon is partnering with Paramount Television to develop a Galaxy Quest TV series. The film’s co-writer Robert Gordon will write and executive produce the pilot, while director Dean Parisot will also return to direct and executive produce. Executive producers Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein are also said to be involved.

While that all sounds reassuring, I think the more important question is will any of the original cast members return? It’s hard to imagine people like Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman reprising their roles, but with the right amount of money anything is possible. Something tells me a complete reboot won’t be as attractive to fans, but the concept could certainly work as a TV series just as well as it did on the big screen. Are you game for a Galaxy Quest TV series?

If they don’t get any of the original actors, I imagine they might try to stunt cast someone from a Star Trek or other sci-fi series. What’s Katee Sackhoff been up to since BSG? I could see her in Sigourney Weaver’s role. (For Reed, I should say Sigourney’s Weaver)
