What We Do in the Shadows Sequel in the Works

With upcoming roles in Jared Hess’s latest film Don Verdean and Steven Spielberg’s The BFG plus the HBO series Divorce (not to mention a recent guest appearance on Rick and Morty), it’s pretty clear that Kiwi actor and comedian Jemaine Clement is in pretty high demand these days. But the good news is that he still has every intention of continuing to work with some of his close friends in the foreseeable future including Flight of the Conchords partner Bret McKenzie and writer-director Taika Waititi. Clement and Waititi’s recent vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows just hit DVD and Blu-ray in the U.S. last month, but now we are hearing that they are already in the process of working on a sequel. What’s more, the long-rumoured Flight of the Conchords movie is looking like it is also getting a lot closer to happening. Hit the jump for more details.

In a recent interview with Stuff.co.nz, Jemaine Clement confirmed that a sequel to What We Do in the Shadows is already in the planning stages and that it will likely focus on Rhys Darby’s werewolf character Anton. The werewolves (not swearwolves) were definitely a highlight of the first film and it would make perfect sense to give them a mockumentary of their own. Clement also recently told The A.V. Club that they had pitched a TV series to TVNZ based on the cops in the movie (played by Karen O’Leary and Mike Minogue) that would revolve around paranormal activity division of the New Zealand Police Department.

In related news, Clement also talked to Indiewire about the possibility of a Flight of the Conchords reunion in the form of a movie:

“We have actually started writing one. But who knows if it will ever be made, we’ve written some notes for some different film ideas. We’re not down to the stage where we’re going, ‘The film is going to be like this,’ it could be this, this, this, this, this.”

Sounds like it’s still a ways off, but at least it gives us hope. Bret’s last gig was writing the music for Muppets Most Wanted so he may have more free time on his hands than Jemaine. Are you looking forward to a Flight of the Conchords movie or a What We Do in the Shadows sequel?

  • Gerry

    Can’t wait, for both projects.

And when are they going to release Fight of the Conchords on blu ray?

Clement was great in Rick and Morty as a very mellow alien.

  • Totally looking forward to it, though I wish it were a TV series just like Conchords, What We Do in the Shadows had an ordinary slice of life vibe that I think would have perfectly suited being episodic.
And a Conchords film could be really fun.
