Monday Morning Box Office Report: Straight Outta Compton Makes Bank

boxofficestraightouttacompton

It was another amazing weekend for Universal Pictures as the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton became the studio’s latest summer hit, opening to an astounding $56 million. That’s the sixth best August debut ever and it obliterates the record for musical biopics previously held by Walk the Line ($22 million). Clearly audiences were happy to have an alternative from the big special effects-driven blockbusters as the summer winds down. Meanwhile, Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. suffered as a result, opening in third place with a disappointing $13.5 million. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation took second place while Fantastic Four and The Gift rounded out the top 5.

1. Straight Outta Compton — $56.1M
2. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation — $17M
3. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. — $13.54M
4. Fantastic Four — $8.00M
5. The Gift — $6.50M
6. Ant-Man — $5.52M
7. Vacation — $5.33M
8. Minions — $5.20M
9. Ricki and the Flash — $4.57M
10. Trainwreck — $3.80M

I don’t think the Man From Uncle suffered because of the success of the other movies, I think the 3 minute Comic-con trailer for it was awful.

I think it’s unfortunate for it that it came out in the same summer as Spy, which I thought was fun, funny and it’s action sequences would not have looked out of place in a Tom Cruise move.

Man From Uncle, based on the trailer, looked to be none of those things.
