Toy Story 4 to Focus on Woody and Bo Peep

Disney’s annual D23 Expo is taking place this weekend in Anaheim, and although we have already heard there will be no new Star Wars: The Force Awakens footage, there is still plenty of other stuff to potentially look forward to. Marvel skipped Comic-Con last month, so it’s probably a safe bet that they will have something to announce here, and on top of that there are quite a few upcoming Pixar projects including The Incredibles 2, Cars 3 and Toy Story 4. As it turns out, John Lasseter has already delivered some new information about the latter. We had previously heard that it would be a romantic comedy of sorts, and now he has confirmed that the movie will focus on the relationship between Woody and Bo Peep. Here’s what he had to say about it:

“It’s a love story with Woody and — and this is news — Bo Peep… At Pixar and at Disney, we only make sequels if we come up with a story that’s as good or better than the original. That’s our rule. We don’t do things just to print money.”

Bo Peep was voiced by Annie Potts in the first two Toy Story films but was notably absent from Toy Story 3, apparently having been sold along with some of Andy’s other toys. This news would seem to indicate that Toy Story 4 will be a prequel, but Lasseter said in previous interviews that it would continue with the toys now being owned by Bonnie. Either way, it sounds like it will be something different for the franchise with more focus on a female perspective thanks to Rashida Jones being one of the screenwriters. Are you looking forward to Toy Story 4?

I don’t think it will be a prequel just for the simple fact that Woody and Bo Peep liked each other in the first film, but never really made a move. Woody always got nervous when she flirted with him. — Who knows, maybe the new one will just start with Bonnie’s mom buying the Bo Peep lamp from a thrift store and taking it home to Bonnie. — If I’ve learned anything from Toy Story films, it’s that the more characters they can cram into a movie, the more toys they’ll be able to sell. Now that Andy’s toys have merged with Bonnie’s toys, plus a few they picked up from the day care center, there’s no way they would downsize to less than half that and do a prequel.

I can’t believe I just put that much thought into this.
