  • Nick

Nothing cheers me up as a new episode of Film Junk. Looking forward to this on my evening walk. Thanks!

  • Colin

Twenty minute intro? I’m absolutely beside myself in anticipation…

  • John

Joe Dante favorites: Piranha, The Howling, Gremlins 1 & 2, Matinee. Looking forward to the premium.

  • Sam

    Amazing intro. Love the remix.

Also for the Joe Dante premium, I know the sweet spot is typically 5-6 movies, but I think this would be a solid line-up that pretty much encompasses all of Dante:

    Piranha
    The Howling
    Gremlins
    Explorers
    Innerspace
    The ‘Burbs
    Gremlins 2
    Matinee

A little more than normal, but I think it would be awesome. If not, I’m not sure where to prune 2 off of. I would say the Gremlins movies, Innerspace, The Burbs are set in stone. So it’s picking from Piranha, The Howling, Matinee and Explorers, it looks like.

  • devolutionary

Those are basically my picks as well. I could live with Piranha being axed although the backstory on that one is worth discussion. Howling might be the oddball in his catalog (darkest) but I really like that movie/backstory also.

  • William Hill

Matinee is Joe Dante’s magnum opus in my personal opinion.

  • Rogue Nation is not projected in full IMAX ratio, and I can’t find anything saying that any footage was shot with IMAX cameras. I saw it on a full size IMAX screen, and it was just your standard widescreen presentation. It’s not even the larger aspect ratio that Skyfall or Contagion had when they were shown in IMAX, just a standard (and for my screen, lackluster) projection.

  • milan

Maybe skip gremlins and keep them for scary xmas premium and include small soldiers, its rubbish but i kinda still like it…

  • Sean

Hmm my bad… it looks like you’re right. I think maybe when I was googling it before I saw an article talking about Ghost Protocol and got mixed up. Glad to hear that I didn’t miss out on anything.

  • Colin

Both Explorers and The Burbs need to be included.

I also need to say… Video Game Premium? Perfect time with the new Hitman.

  • Nic

Definitely include The ‘Burbs. One of the first discussion points needs to be the apostrophe in the title.

  • Colin

Include Small Soldiers as well… I’m sure Frank will have a lot to say about its Burger King promotions.

  • Sean

Yeah we considered it but it did not really seem like the Hitman tie-in would matter much. Hopefully we’ll get to it eventually but we just wanted a premium that was mostly good movies for once.

  • Colin

You guys have been on a bit of a bad/mediocre movie tear with the premiums, so I suppose that makes sense.

  • Matt the Kiwi

Spotlight is the TIFF flick I’m most excited to hear feedback on but I’m hoping there’ll be a few more doco’s announced.

Jay, speaking of TIFF doco’s, a great podcast (not as great as Filmjunk) has just been released with Sam Harris and Joshua Oppenheimer having an hour long conversation regarding Act of Killing and Look of Silence. Fascinating discussion and reveals loads of insights into both films and what’s happened since – made me want to see them both again with the background knowledge now revealed.

Highly recommended you check it out: http://www.samharris.org/blog/item/the-moral-gaze

  • Matt Gaffney

Jumping off the comedy junkmail, the funniest movie to come out in recent years is The Wolf of Wallstreet. I had to try and hold laughs back because I was missing stuff that happened. I think it’s interesting that’s not a “traditional” comedy. And I think as I’m getting older, straight comedies don’t do as much for me. Am I right or have the traditional comedies just not been as good?

  • Phil

Piranha could be saved for a Piranha series premium (which will happen sometime in 2025 or later) or thrown into a Jaws premium so I would replace it with Small Soldiers for a taste of slumming it Dante.

  • devolutionary

Wasn’t mentioned on the show but was also curious as to whether Sean or Frank watched the lo-fi behind the scenes doc on Wet Hot American Summer “Hurricane of Fun: The Making Of…”. Saw most of it but it also oddly felt similar in comedy/tone to the movie. Lots of weird in-jokes between the crew and cast. Definitely felt like scraping the barrel of whatever extra camera footage they could get — very grainy. Even unscripted, Paul Rudd was pretty hilarious in several scenes.

  • Christopher Lee premium for October.
    Just sayin.

  • Sam

I’ve been pitching a Hammer Film premium for a while, which would essentially be the same thing, though would omit stuff like The Wicker Man or City of the Dead.

Hammer/Christopher Lee premium would be more than welcome for me.

  • The people have spoken Sean.

  • The child crying in the background really creeped me out. I though I had a ghost-child in my apartment

  • pcch7

I loved MI5 too, thought it was awesome and is probably my favorite of the series. Great action and setpieces, and Rebecca Ferguson was awesome. Last time I saw her was in a swedish soap like 15 years ago

  • Kenneth Serenyi

I just wanted to give a slight correction to what was mentioned on this episode: The ‘Mission: Impossible’ Premium is indeed available for a minimum donation of $1.00. However, as Jay mentions, if you want to get Jay’s “full” review of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, you need to download filmjunk #349, which is another $0.99. :P

  • pcch7

I accidentally ordered two copies of Rififi on bluray from amazon and it costs more to ship it back then the cost of the movie, so I’m eating that one. Fuck.

Looking forward to hear what Frank thinks of Thief, love that film.

  • Sean

Sorry about that. We’re doing our best to make the show as subtly uncomfortable as possible.

  • Sean

We are probably looking at A Nightmare on Elm Street for October. But if you can convince James to take part maybe we will reconsider!

  • frankw35

Dante–Piranha, The Howling, and Matinee (which should include a bonus review of Mant!).

  • I’ll bring James if you bring Reed.

  • Tony D’Amico

I apologize for the long message ahead of time, but I love you Frank, so I had to write it.
Even though this has been beat to death, I felt the need to chime in for Frankie. I agree 100% with him in regards to my star ratings on Letterboxd reflect only my personal opinion of how I was entertained by the film. It’s to tell my LB friends how much I enjoy it, and I could give a fuck if somebody thinks I’m wrong. It’s my opinion, just as Franks star rating reflects his opinion.
I’m not a professional critic, I don’t expect people to read a review I write and expect to feel the same as I do. I note in my profile that my reviews reflect how the movie made me feel, if I write something you think is interesting, cool. If you think I’m a fucking idiot, that’s fine too. Nobody can tell me what I’m allowed to enjoy, and I’m not allowed to tell anybody what they are allowed to enjoy. I just like explaining what I love or hate about films. That’s the folly of your “overrated” statement from a few years ago Frank, who are you to tell me a film I like shouldn’t be liked, if you don’t like it that’s ok, but fuck you if you want to impose your will on me.

That’s the other thing I wanted to mention, I go to the theater 50 to 60 times a year and I have never read a professionally written review beforehand in order to influence me going or not. If a like how a trailer looks, I’m going, that’s final. To be honest, Film Junk, Cinecast, and maybe 1 or 2 other podcasts are the only reviews I may hear before I see a film, and even if you guys take a shit on a film, I will go see it if I had planned to. I could care less if you guys didn’t like it. I just enjoy hearing you guys discuss your opinions, it’s entertaining in itself You guys should feel the same I think, I find it a little sad and pathetic that you constantly need to reference Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic and what they think of a particular film. Fuck them, they review films for the “Mouth Breathers” Frank, you should know that. For example I shat on Lone Ranger because I was anticipating a lot of fun and got a very boring pile of shit for 2 hours and an amazing action set-piece for the last 30 minutes. Had it been just a little more entertaining in the first 2 hours I might have enjoyed the film.
If I sound like an asshole, I learned it from you Jay!

  • DrewNugent

FilmJunk is becoming more and more like a 3 hour version of “On Cinema” every week… Frank is Gregg Turkington and Jay is Decker.

  • DrewNugent

It’s amazing how similar this is to Jay and Frank’s recent arguments.

  • If your reviewing the Gremlins movies for the Premium you have to include Small Soldiers! Also Matinee would be great to hear a discussion on.

  • Stinker

Joe Dante Premium: Gremlins 1 + 2, Small Soldiers, Howling, The Burb, Innerspace and Explorer. That would be a nice bunch of Classics from the good old days.

  • Gerry

Jay, re your point that some films are objectively great, I respectfully disagree.

I’ve tried many times to watch Citizen Kane for a second time as it’s allegedly the best film ever made, but I never managed to get past 50 minutes, because I didn’t find it compelling.

I think that it’s definitely an important film because of it’s movie innovations, but some of Leni Riefenstahl’s films introduced movie innovations and, for me, they weren’t great.

For me there should be a distinction between important and great.

The first time I saw Casablanca it blew me away. I’m with Ebert on that one.

I skimmed the list of ‘best’ American films that you posted on your site recently and noted lots of omissions, in my opinion, e.g. John Ford’s ‘The Grapes Of Wrath’ and ‘Mister Roberts’ and Hal Ashby’s ‘The Last Detail’.

Compelling has to count for something.

  • Colin

Is there any question at this point that Jay is a true disciple of Trump?

  • Colin

Feel like selling it to me? I’ve got $15 in Paypal I’m dying to send someone… :)

  • Sean

    You drive a hard bargain…

  • Sean

More like On Cinema is becoming Film Junk! I’ve actually noticed other similarities in the past. In a previous On Cinema review Tim Heidecker referred to Eric Bana as Eric Banana and has stumbled over actor’s names in a way that is very similar to Jay. It was almost enough to make me wonder if they’re listening to Film Junk. When you think about it, we’re precisely the kind of obscure, self-important amateurish podcast that they’re trying to make fun of.

  • milan

For next week all of u pls watch benji the hunted and full metal jacket and will see the ratings for them…

  • darksiders

Question: could it be possible that Frankie went into Rogue Nation not wanting to like it as he would have to kick his beloved JJ Abrams’ MI:3 down a notch???

  • pcch7

I would but honestly, it’d be cheaper than that for you to just buy it from amazon I think. It’s region b though, to clarify.

  • ReelJunkie

I think its the latter. And I kind of agree with what Sean said in the episode that comedies come in cycles and this one is at its last breath almost. Just like the Apatow brand came out of the blue, the next one will do too.

  • Colin

    Oh god yes

  • Colin

Oh, I thought you accidentally snagged an extra Criterion copy… alas.

  • Kenneth Serenyi

I distinctly remember Frank attributing the high box-office numbers for Ghost Protocol to the fact that it was shown in IMAX theaters. However during this episode, when Sean was talking about his fake IMAX experience, Frank no longer seemed to care about IMAX attendance numbers… ;)

  • Trav606

The Howling and The Burbs would make for great additions to that Dante Premium!

  • pcch7

Sadly not, it’s the Arrow Academy / Arrow Films or whatever the fuck they’re going by. They always have awesome artwork on the covers

  • Essie

    Yay!

  • LordAwesome

The Arrow release is superior to the Criterion, like most of their releases that overlap.
