Tom Cruise Already Planning M:I6 and Edge of Tomorrow 2

There was a time when it seemed like Tom Cruise was getting ready to bid farewell to the Mission: Impossible franchise and perhaps hand it off to someone else, but since then he has seemingly re-evaluated just how important it is to his career. The realization probably came after Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol was the highest-grossing installment in the series, earning $694 million worldwide. Now that the fifth installment has garnered strong reviews and is expected to earn at least $40 million this weekend, he is already eager to get started on the next mission. That’s not the only sequel that he has on his mind, however; word on the street is that he is dying to make a follow-up to last year’s Edge of Tomorrow as well. Hit the jump for more details.

Tom Cruise appeared on The Daily Show earlier this week, where he told Jon Stewart that he had a soft spot for the Mission: Impossible series, partially because the original film was the first movie he ever produced. He also said that they’re starting to work on the sixth installment now and they will “probably start shooting it next summer.” Whether that is actually true or just a way of feigning confidence in the latest film remains to be seen, but I for one tend to believe him.

Cruise was also recently interviewed by MTV where he talked about the possibility of an Edge of Tomorrow sequel, despite the fact that it severely underperformed at the box office. Here’s what he had to say:

“I pitched it to McQuarrie and Doug [Liman]. We were there one night and I was like, ‘I’ve got an idea for it.’… It could be so much fun. Gotta get Emily. I was like, ‘Emily, please.’ She was like, ‘Give me another year, please.'”

While he would not reveal what the idea is, it’s interesting to note that Japanese author Hiroshi Sakurazaka, who wrote the original novel (All You Need Is Kill) is working on a sequel of his own. Either way, some people seem worried about a potential sequel, preferring to leave Edge of Tomorrow as a standalone film. I think I’d be interested in seeing what else they might do with the concept… you know, just so long as it doesn’t turn into a Terminator Genisys-style trainwreck. What do you think? Are you interested in an Edge of Tomorrow sequel and can we ever have too many Mission: Impossible movies?

I liked EOT and thought it was a entertaining and well done movie. I for one wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel as long as they can make it interesting and top the original.

EOT was definitely an under appreciated movie. It’s a shame more people did not come out to see it and support solid movie making. It deserved more.

Loved EOT and MI: Rogue Nation so I’ll happily lap up some more.

  • I will munch down any bit of Tom Cruise action I can get my hands on. He excels at action!

No idea where they can possibly take EoT2.
