San Andreas Director Reunites with The Rock for Rampage Video Game Adaptation

A movie adaptation of the classic video game series Rampage has been in the works for almost four years at this point, and after a long period of stagnation it seems like it is now finally about to go somewhere. The Rock himself, Dwayne Johnson recently landed the lead role in the upcoming movie which now also has a director lined up in the form of Brad Peyton. While that name will probably still be unknown to most, he is a logical choice to pair up with Johnson. The two have already seen massive success together with not only this summer’s blockbuster San Andreas but also 2012’s Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which combined have made more than $795 million in theaters worldwide. Hit the jump for the full story.
Other than Rampage, Johnson and Peyton are also working together on not just one but two sequels to Journey 2 which might end up getting filmed back-to-back. Before those two can get underway though, Johnson has Fast & Furious 8 filming to take care of and then Rampage starts shooting next summer. The movie will be directed from a script by Ryan Engle, who previously wrote the Liam Neeson starring action movie Non-Stop.
Unlike the games, where you’re controlling a human transformed into a giant monster smashing up buildings and people in various cities to turn them to rubble, the movie will focus on Johnson as a person trying to fight against the attack, while the tone will be somewhat akin to Ghostbusters and Independence Day. Like in the original game, the movie will have three monsters: a gorilla, a wolf, and a lizard. Rampage is aiming to wreck havoc in theaters across the world in 2017.
