Minecraft Movie Gets a New Director

Late last year, Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) dropped out as director of the Minecraft movie, taking screenwriters Kieran and Michele Mulroney (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows) with him. Apparently their approach wasn’t quite clicking with Mojang, developers of the hugely successful video game, so they decided to move on. Now this week Mojang has officially announced a new director for the project and it’s a pretty unexpected choice: Rob McElhenney, creator of the FX series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
The news was announced yesterday on Mojang’s website, offering an explanation as to why McElhenney was in attendance at Minecon in London earlier this month. He may seem like a strange choice considering that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is known for its edgy adult humour, but he also recently set up a family adventure film at Legendary Pictures called Figment. Before he created It’s Always Sunny, he also was an actor with small parts in The Devil’s Own and Wonder Boys.
Of course, we still don’t know what the premise behind this Minecraft movie will be. It is believed to be a live-action feature, but whether or not it will be a self-aware satire in the vein of The Lego Movie remains to be seen. Either way, the game now has over 100 million registered users, which means this movie will in all likelihood be absolutely huge. Are you looking forward to the Minecraft movie?
