Pacific Rim 2 Rumored to Start Production Later This Year

After Warner Brothers decided to turn down a partnership with Legendary Pictures for Pacific Rim 2 due to the middling success of the first movie in the U.S., things looked grim for Guillermo del Toro and Co for a while. Luckily, Universal ended up taking on the project, preparing to have it ready to hit theaters by August 4, 2017 with shooting expected to begin sometime in 2015. We now finally have rumors specifying when the movie will start filming, and it looks like it’ll be this November. Find out more about the rumorĀ (as well as a possible title for the upcoming film) after the jump.

The rumors of the possible shooting schedule comes from /Film, where they’ve heard talk from the crew working on del Toro’s upcoming film Crimson Peak mentioning they’d be going to Toronto to start filming Pacific Rim 2 in November. While that isn’t exactly a bulletproof confirmation of the schedule, it seems reasonable knowing that it isn’t second-hand information as well as the fact that Universal’s hope is to start production in 2015.

Concerning the possible title, Global News has the scoop that the working title for the project will be Maelstrom. That could very well be an indication of either a possible title or sub-title for the movie… or it could be absolutely nothing at all. Code names are often put into place to keep nosey onlookers at bay. Whatever the movie ends up being named, Pacific Rim 2 will pick up the story a few years after the events of the original film. It is also said to have a stronger focus on the kaiju this time around. Written by del Toro, Travis Beacham, and Zac Penn it is expected that Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Burn Gorman, and Rink Kikuchi will all return, but the exact cast hasn’t been revealed to the public at this point. Are you looking forward to Pacific Rim 2?

  • I really liked the first one, so I certainly look forward to it!

  • Colin

    Very excited about this.

  • ECONOMYpolitica

    Needs a title change bad.

  • Mrespony

Charlie Hunnam was brutal in the first film and I’d lay about 5% of the blame for that on him. I love the concept and the execution of the visuals, but the screenplay was rubbish.

Loved the first one. Would be so fucking grand if it raked in so much money that they let him do Hellboy 3
