Monday Morning Box Office Report: Ant-Man Wins with Second Smallest Marvel Debut

boxofficeantman

Despite decent reviews and a star-studded cast, Marvel’s Ant-Man opened pretty much on par with projections and could not replicate the massive success of Guardians of the Galaxy last summer. It earned $58 million domestically which is the second lowest Marvel debut right behind The Incredible Hulk although Ant-Man had the lowest per-screen average. It would seem that lesser known Marvel characters rely heavily on word of mouth to bring in the mainstream moviegoers and the buzz just wasn’t there this time around. Elsewhere, Minions fell to second place with $50 million while Judd Apatow’s Trainwreck opened in third with a solid $30 million debut. Inside Out and Jurassic World rounded out the top 5. In tenth place, Mr. Holmes also had a great weekend, earning $2.49 million on 363 screens while offering a decent alternative to the effects-heavy summer blockbusters.

1. Ant-Man — $58.04M
2. Minions — $50.2M
3. Trainwreck — $30.2M
4. Inside Out — $11.66M
5. Jurassic World — $11.4M
6. Terminator Genisys — $5.4M
7. Magic Mike XXL — $4.5M
8. The Gallows — $4.01M
9. Ted 2 — $2.7M
10. Mr. Holmes — $2.49M

It’s funny to think that Ant-Man was considered a safe-gamble by Marvel at only a $130 million budget. Haven’t seen it but according to viewing exit scores, women rated the movie much higher than men?

So size does or doesn’t make a difference?

That’s still pretty good for a Marvel B/C list type comic charater…probably more like a C than B for that matter. I still have yet to see it but will probably catch this one in the theater. Will wait to hear what you guys have to say but I haven’t been following the blogs/reviews on this one. Hopefully positive word of mouth will lift it’s box-office past its budget costs.

I remember Thor and Cap’n murica only opened in the $60 million range in 2011. Now look ay ‘em. Once we see Ant-Man in Civil War and Ant-Man 2 is greenlit that interest will skyrocket.

Probably similar to Mad Max: Fury Road. We’ll see if good word of mouth can help Ant-Man out.

I took my Kid’s to the movie, it was really entertaining, lots of child aimed humor but all in all it was fun, and you really want to root for Paul Rudd, he’s just a likable character and Micheal Douglas is bad ass.

    I’ll wait…
