David Gordon Green to Direct Boston Marathon Drama

Just a few months after the Boston Marathon Bombing happened in April of 2013, there was already a movie in the works as screenwriters Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy (The Fighter) optioned the rights to the book Boston Strong by Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge. A few months later, 20th Century Fox picked up the movie and Daniel Espinosa (Safe House) signed on to direct. Then CBS Films decided to set up their own Boston Marathon Bombing movie, Patriot’s Day, and recruited Mark Wahlberg to star. Now this week a third project has materialized with a pretty unexpected director at the helm. David Gordon Green, the man who brought us such wide ranging films as Pineapple Express, Your Highness and George Washington, is currently on board to direct. Hit the jump for the full scoop.
According to THR, David Gordon Green has signed on to direct a movie called Stronger for Lionsgate Films. The movie will focus on the story of Jeff Bauman, a survivor of the Boston Marathon Bombing who lost both his legs in the attack while waiting at the finish line for his girlfriend. The script was written by John Pollono and Scott Silver while David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman are producing.
Silver, Hoberman and Lieberman also worked on The Fighter, which means each of the three Boston Marathon movies in development has someone involved from that film. It feels a little weird to think that all of these Boston natives are trying to capitalize on the tragedy, but I guess you could also say that they want to share their city’s courage and resiliency. David Gordon Green, however, is not from Boston and this seems like a bit of a departure for him, although I’m curious to see what he does with it.
