Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Comic-Con Trailer

batmanvsupermancomiccon

There were a handful of trailers unveiled at the Warner Brothers Comic-Con panel today and many of them (including the first Suicide Squad trailer) have yet to be officially released online, but the good news is that we do have a brand new trailer for Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Unlike the first teaser trailer, this one features some pretty extensive footage and runs for a full three-and-a-half minutes. It includes our first look at Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor plus a much better look at Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne / Batman. There is not a ton of action here, however, it is mostly just setting up characters and storylines… I’m starting to think those rumours about the film being split in two could still end up being true. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theatres on March 25th, 2016; check out the new trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

  • Derek

Batman is a fictional character, so they can do whatever the hell they want with his origin story, but if this trailer is suggesting he becomes Batman after Superman destroys Wayne Tower (in Metropolis?… I know, too nerdy), I am not expecting to enjoy this take.

  • Blake in Boston

Derek, I suggest rewatching the trailer… I don’t think that’s what is happening at all, at least in terms of plot.

  • Corey Watts

This has the possibility of being genius. To allow for audiences’ reactions to the destruction of Metropolis at the end of “Man Of Steel”, to be realized and manifested on screen through Bruce Wayne/Batman is a wonderful decision on the part of the filmmakers. I also am feeling more and more that Ben Affleck was a great choice for this incarnation of Batman. I’m very excited!

  • Stinker

    Ben Affleck
looks good a Bruce Wayne, and the Story, well who cares? It has the potential
to be overloaded with main characters from future movies. Could be the Last
Stand of DC, or something good. Has potential raging from a MST3K victim to ……a Movie?

Is a good Montage, and Ben Affleck sucks not so much. Hope that the movie makes enough dough to get the Affleck Bat Man started, which is most likely a prequel to this movie.

  • Jameson

This looks great…then again so did the Man of Steel trailers. My biggest hope is that Chris Terrio’s script overcompensates for Snyder’s directing.

  • ReelJunkie

That was easily one of the best trailers I have seen in a long time.

    Buuuut

I’m a little worried about how the film will juggle and bring together all the plot threads. There seems to be a lot going on in the trailer. And there are probably elements that they still haven’t revealed yet.

I have faith in the team, so I hope they deliver.

  • Dave

In this universe, Gotham and Metropolis are apparently sister cities with only a bay sitting between them, like Oakland and San Francisco, so they are very close together. As for Batman, this new version is based on The Dark Knight Returns. Affleck’s Wayne was Batman for years, then retired. The Metropolis destruction is what gets him back in the suit.

  • Flo Lieb

Finally, we will get to see the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents! Now all we need is to see Uncle Ben’s murder in the upcoming Marvel Spider-Man movie too…

  • Jason Black

Story sounds good with a natural progression from MOS. Batman pissed at superman due to the 1st films destruction. Wont go on as for spoilers but it all feels right, Not sure how Aqua-man and Wonder Woman get in on the act though. Hope that does not spoil it.

  • Jason Black

I would like to see Superman save people from natural disasters/accidents though!

  • Nuno

Zach Snyder’s films would be amazing if they were five minutes long, free on YouTube and HAD NO DIALOGUE.

  • Derek

Thanks guys! After re watching and hearing some other takes of what’s going on, I see what you’re saying. I’ve just always found it odd that Batman isn’t even mentioned in Man of Steel, even if he is retired, especially if this is supposed to be a connected universe. But I’ve only watched Man of Steel once so maybe I missed it.

  • William Hill

They couldn’t have picked a less intimidating or uncharismatic actor for Lex Luthor than Jesse Eisenberg. I don’t know what the hell they were thinking on that one.

  • LordAwesome

    The infantilization of cinema continues.

  • Justin H

I don’t get the characterization they are going for either. Not getting a Luthor vibe off of him from what was in the trailers, just a generic “creepy villain”

  • 1138sw

Kinda like what I see so far at least the parts with Henry Cavill. Still not crazy about BA as Batman though and the more I see him the more distracting he becomes. Hopefully I’ll change my mind when I see him on the big screen.

Gotta admit though Jessie Eisenberg just looks awful as luthor…I know it’s just a trailer but he comes across as just really annoying.

I wish WB had spent time building universes for both Batman and Superman and the rest of the DC characters instead of taking FM’s Dark knight returns and using that storyline as the genesis for the entire DC universe. It still seems weird to me. The Dark knight returns is the chaotic rebirth of a lost hero left embittered and struggling to find lost purpose who enters the final stages of his life and makes preparations for a future without him. How they re-purposed that idea into a root story of the justice league is just like said…weird.

  • Justin H

Like where they are going with Bruce, glad they are addressing the level of destruction from the first movie. All the stuff with Supe still looks eye-rollingly on the nose and frankly just dumb. 9/11 imagery is way overused, but seeing Bruce running into the dust cloud was still a pretty good image and very Batman feeling.

  • Justin H

I’m thinking he’s still gong to retire or die or something, cause I’m with you, DKR and Miller’s Batman in general isn’t very heroic and I can’t really picture him joining with JL. Guess its just a general feel of Miller’s Bats.

  • Justin H

Blockbusters are blockbusters, but keep fighting that fight and carrying that torch.

  • 1138sw

All the movies dating back to Tim Burton’s version have taken something from Miller. Ideas, visual motifs, ambiance and designs stem from the great Miller. The guy was a genius for sure giving comics a punch in the gut and a great need for some respectability so I understand the need to draw from him.

But this is just wholesale borrowing which is like I said just weird and off putting.

I don’t necessarily agree that the DKR wasn’t in general heroic. I do think deep down Bruce Wayne as nuts/embittered/tragic as he’d become, he was still a hero. And though he enjoys the the poundage and brutality he delivers, deep down he cares for his city and his people and I think that does come through in parts of the story. Granted he ends the Joker for real but he is greatly pushed to edge before he does so. I guess I like to see Batman as a hero even as messed up as he is as a 50 something year old physically battered man. : )

  • 1138sw

I agree glad they are finally addressing the destruction…definitely now everything is beginning to gain some kind of sense. Wish Snyder and gang didn’t wait 3 years to address it though. Couldn’t they have added a little something at the end to at least acknowledge what happened?

  • Deven Science

I see what you’re saying, Corey. Many people’s complaints about the movie was the the collateral destruction of two dudes fighting was over the top, and this actually addresses and agrees with that, in a way. Didn’t think of it quite that way, but it’s a solid observation.

  • DrewNugent

What the hell is going on here?

  • Justin H

Thats what I thought they should have done as well. Superman didn’t seem to give a shit or even really be phased by it, which made me dislike him.

  • Justin H

Yeah I suppose I was conflating the Batman in All-Star Batman and Robin with just the grizzled version in DKR. I also wish they’d push Batman a bit further (I loved All-Star, even after pretty much souring on Miller), even though it would seem weird for him to join the JL. I guess it all depends on how connected they are really trying to make these.

  • Adam

Batman and Supes are big fans of Raiders and cosplay every second saturday of the month.

  • Adam

The quick shot of Bruces parents getting killed (do we really need to see that AGAIN? ) looks like some Watchmen B-roll

  • kyri

    supegail yummy,

  • Theo

It could have been worse… It could have shown Superman sitting at a deli, eating chicken shawarma.

  • Theo

He didn’t give a shit?…. if she didn’t give a s*** then the human race would have been destroyed. What… Saving the planet isn’t good enough, on a superhero’s first day on the job? Zack Snyder knew exactly what he was doing. there is even an interview with him addressing why he ended it the way he did. “PART” of one city’s destruction and casualties are nothing compared to the loss of a planets entire population. all of these haters are expecting a cookie cutter, apple pie, and rainbows happy ending.

the movie was not called Superman, for a reason. Unseasoned and untrained, Kal-el was simply doing what he thought was right…. and if haters would have just read between the lines. Even Clark Kent’s father told him… That people would stumble and they would fall… but in time… They would join him in the sun.

  • Matt the Kiwi

Yeah, cinema was mature and sophisticated until Superman and the Mole Men came out and infantilized it…in 1951!

  • pcch7

    Underwhelmed.

  • Reddy

Thank you! Been saying that from day one. This was Clark’s first real fight, so of course he’s going to be “unpolished” in terms of keeping the destruction to a minimum.

  • Reddy

You didn’t miss it, cause there’s no mention of Batman. I don’t believe there would be any reason to mention Batman in MOS. Most of the movie’s events takes place outside of Metropolis. Clark was traveling the world looking for clues about his past, the big fight in Smallville, the Indian ocean, etc. It’s just the final fight with Zod that happens mostly in Metropolis.

  • Justin H

Haters. lol. I mean like he didn’t seem worried or shocked about the destruction and didn’t do anything to try and lessen it at all. I’m not talking the storyline I’m talking the writing of the character.

  • Justin H

You guys are acting like ppl are saying the destruction SHOULDN’T have happened. The criticism I have of it is that it seemed like they put it all in there so it would look badass and are covering their asses now. If Supe had acted in the least bit shocked or ashamed of what happened around him (other than having to snap a neck after tens of thousands of people already died) I would buy that it wasn’t just a lazy masturbatory vfx sequence. Instead, he’s kissing Lois Lane while floating down into the rubble and pulverized corpses of the people. Then hes cracking jokes after slamming drones in front of the military.

He’s only ever doubtful when he’s having eye-rollingly hammy scenes with his parents and being told how much like Jesus he gon be one day.

The direction they are taking is the smart thing to do now, but they should have at least teased at some kinda conflict caused by the fact that he basically helped destroy a large portion of a city.

  • Bandit Manatee

The red capes are coming line probably has more context in the film but here it just made me cringe. Like wtf is there more than one superman? It’s a bit of a reach

  • devolutionary

The delivery by Eisenberg is what really made me cringe. He feels like pre-pubescent Luther. I’m assuming “red-capes” is a metaphor for the British “Red Coats”?

  • JC

Been disappointed by enough movies not to read to much into a good trailer, but I’m looking forward to seeing this.
The whole wonderwoman/aquaman could get in the way of a good popcorn movie, kinda thinking 2 movies wouldn’t be so bad.
Jess Iceberg, not keen so far but I like the kid, i’ll reserve judgement.

  • Xidor

I think they should go back an re-release (MOS) “Man of Steel” with Bruce Wayne in the city under attack. It’s too bad they didn’t know if they were going to make a sequel when they made MOS. I think I would be more interested in re-watching MOS if I knew that there was a plan to make another movie. The fact that you see some Luther Corp and Wayne stuff getting smashed doesn’t cut-it. I agree with Sean that they could turn BvS into two movies. I think they should re-release MOS with some new footage that ties in BVS and then they could have a trilogy.

  • Bandit Manatee

Yeah that’s the reference and it just makes less sense to me because it’s not like there is an army of superman there is just one red cape unless I guess he is referring to super heroes in general. Lol I’m way overthinking this trailer

  • Mrespony

Didn’t he sob in Lois’s arms after the battle with Zod was done? I don’t think that was ONLY because he had just killed Zod, he also extinguished the kryptonians and destroyed half a city fighting his own kind, resulting in thousands of deaths. In the next scene with the general neither he nor his driver seemed all that upset either, the captain even remarks at how hot he is. Oh, and he did save the entire planet. If your complaint is that this is unrealistic don’t watch movies about muthas in capes flying around and shooting lasers out of their eyes. It seems clear to me that there’s a whole other movie coming that addresses the fallout from Metropolis’ destruction and we all just watched its trailer. The semi-realistic tone of MoS and The DK trilogy is simply a style of filmmaking that is popular today, just like the campy tone of the Salkind’s Superman series was for 70’s and 80’s audiences. I’m most certain that while filmmakers are attempting to ground these comic book movies in some version of reality that you aren’t supposed to exit the theater muttering “wow, that could really happen” to yourself.

  • bubz

I like parts of this and some of the ideas in it, and I like what they seem to be going for with the general storyline, but my god does it look so disgusting visually. Not just the CGI stuff and the backgrounds that look awful but the attempt at this religious or iconic imagery revolving around Superman is so on the nose, heavy handed and pretentious. In the hands of another film maker those ideas could work, but in the hands of Snyder it becomes kind of laughable.
