Phil Lord and Chris Miller to Direct Star Wars Han Solo Spin-Off

We’ve been hearing for a while now that one of the Star Wars Anthology films currently in development would probably revolve around a young Han Solo. Now, just a few days prior to the start of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Disney and Lucasfilm have officially confirmed the existence of said Han Solo spin-off. What’s more, they have also announced that it will be directed by two of the hottest directors in Hollywood right now: Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, 21 and 22 Jump Street). Lord and Miller have been courted to direct just about everything as of late, from a Ghostbusters spin-off to The Flash movie, but it would appear that Star Wars trumps all. The duo had this to say about the announcement:
“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”
The script was written by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan and focuses on “how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.” THR is reporting that this is not the same project that Josh Trank recently departed, which sort of debunks rumours that the Boba Fett and Han Solo spin-offs might actually be one combined film. At any rate, it seems safe to assume that Lord and Miller will bring their comedic sensibility to this movie… let’s hope it pays off. It is currently scheduled to hit theatres on May 25th, 2018. Are you psyched to see a young Han Solo movie?
