Ten Thousand Saints Trailer Starring Ethan Hawke and Asa Butterfield

It may not be a new Richard Linklater movie, but the first trailer for Ten Thousand Saints does look like something that is bound to draw comparisons to his work. This is a coming-of-age story about a teenager (played by Asa Butterfield) who gets pulled into the straight-edge punk scene in New York City after moving to the East Village to live with his dad (Ethan Hawke just happens to play said “cool” dad). Based on the novel by Eleanor Henderson, it is written and directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, who previously brought us the big screen adaptation of Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor. With a cast that also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Emily Mortimer and Emile Hirsch, this seems like another Sundance gem worth keeping your eye on. Ten Thousand Saints hits select theatres on Aug. 14th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

    stacked with cliches! pass!

  • I still love when Ethan Hawke plays Ethan Hawke.

On the one hand. American Splendor is great. On the other hand, Asa Butterfield.
On the one hand, Ethan Hakwe. On the other hand, that stupid fucking haircut

  • I’m curious to see how much of the straight-edge hardcore angle is played up or if it’s just window-dressing. The trailer feels pretty dang bland other than Ethan Hawke but I’m hoping they’re just trying to sell it to the older crowd by downplaying anything edgy. We’ll see.
