I agree that the humor in the book sounds immature, but the book is meant to be as realistic as possible. If you have been in situations that are dangerous, you might say things that may sound childish. I flew single piloted airplanes in the U.S. Marines and when things get tense in the aircraft, you talk to yourself and a lot of it would sound ridiculous if others were listening.

Actually, it would have been nice for Danny Glover or Denzel Washington to play the lead… someone I would actually root for to survive.

Read the book and thought it was ok, couldn’t really stand the main characters attempts at humour. All of his “witty” comments were just to much.

Way more excited for this, looks like a thrilling ride!

Yep thats what I was talking about. I’ve loved it so far. It keeps enough of its world vague enough that you are interested but not having to be bored out of your mind by hamfisted world building. The tech in it is also really great and has a sense of feasibility to it. I also find the concept of the main character’s profession really fun. I would definitely recommend it.

How is Blindsight? I’m assuming you’re referring to the Peter Watts book? Another coworker recommended it to me (he’s met him before). I’ve only just read Starfish but found out that his other books are free to download via Creative Commons license.

The book was pretty Hard SF in a very near future, which was nice. I only read a few chapters but was digging that it felt like real science (I went to art school so I have no idea how accurate anything was.)

This does look much more promising than the psuedo-philosophical mumbo jumbo of Prometheus. The straight story should allow for some actual exciting movie watching.

This looks pretty good.

About the book, I picked up the audiobook for a road trip and absolutely HATED it. Hated the “humor” most of all. Dude says “booya” or some shit…I mean, come on. Sucks because I was really into him setting up his food source and whatnot but everything else just turned me off big time.

Maybe actually reading it would be better, avoiding any delivery problems from the narrator of the audiobook (who was more shit than the writing itself.)

Maybe I’m just a stick in the mud. Or I could have just read The Southern Reach Trillogy and most of Blindsight and wanted something more than some yuks on Mars.

I imagined Joshua Jackson, think he would have been perfect but you probably need a name for this, and as far as stars go, Matt Damon is one of my favorites. Can’t see Butler in this role, doesn’t fit for me

Actually excited for this. Hope Ridley can redeem himself with a good sci-fi film after the atrocity that was Prometheus.
