Ridley Scott’s The Martian Trailer Starring Matt Damon

themartian

Here’s the first trailer for Ridley Scott’s upcoming movie The Martian, based on the very successful self-published book by Andy Weir. I am about halfway through the book as we speak so I was a little hesitant to watch the trailer… but hey, sometimes sacrifices have to be made. The book is sort of like a fictional version of Apollo 13, following an astronaut who is stranded on Mars when his crew is forced to abort a mission. It’s essentially a survival film with a lot (and I mean a lot) of scientific problem solving, but fortunately it looks like Ridley Scott has managed to make it all look very cinematic as well. November is shaping up to be a pretty exciting month indeed. The Martian stars Matt Damon, Kate Mara, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig and Jeff Daniels and it hits theatres on Nov. 25th. Check out the first trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

Man, I’m so excited for this. The book is amazing and with Ridley Scott you just know that all the tech design is gonna look awesome. Which, judging by this, it does. Can’t wait.

I’m gonna science the shit out of this movie. Suck THAT, Neil Armstrong!

  • Tommy

Let’s guess lines from The Martian if we haven’t read The Martian.
    Isaac Newton, you suck!
    General Relativity, my ass!
    I’mma terraform this bitch!

We all know that Frank watched this trailer 15 times by now.
And we all know he will deny the fuck out of this fact on the next FJ.

Overall, looks good. It appears from this that they severely abbreviate the establishment of communication, but they might have to in a movie with a two hour run time.

How do you like those apples, Buzz Aldrin?

Once you’re a parent, you’re the ghost of your children’s future.

Still can’t see Damon as Watney and I really like Damon and think he’s a good actor but what I had in my mind was someone who was more…how shall i put it more rough around the edges…to contrast against a typical Nasa astronaut who tends to be more button up. For some reason I always imagined Gerard Butler in the role or even Nathan Fillion.

Hope this is good because I really liked the book. I love Ridley but lately his films have really fallen short for me.

Actually excited for this. Hope Ridley can redeem himself with a good sci-fi film after the atrocity that was Prometheus.

I imagined Joshua Jackson, think he would have been perfect but you probably need a name for this, and as far as stars go, Matt Damon is one of my favorites. Can’t see Butler in this role, doesn’t fit for me

Looks great; Sean Bean’s gonna die.

  • Sam

I actually pictured someone like Sam Rockwell while reading the book. Though, that would call back to Moon a lot if he were actually in this too.

    This looks pretty good.

About the book, I picked up the audiobook for a road trip and absolutely HATED it. Hated the “humor” most of all. Dude says “booya” or some shit…I mean, come on. Sucks because I was really into him setting up his food source and whatnot but everything else just turned me off big time.

Maybe actually reading it would be better, avoiding any delivery problems from the narrator of the audiobook (who was more shit than the writing itself.)

Maybe I’m just a stick in the mud. Or I could have just read The Southern Reach Trillogy and most of Blindsight and wanted something more than some yuks on Mars.

The book was pretty Hard SF in a very near future, which was nice. I only read a few chapters but was digging that it felt like real science (I went to art school so I have no idea how accurate anything was.)

This does look much more promising than the psuedo-philosophical mumbo jumbo of Prometheus. The straight story should allow for some actual exciting movie watching.

How is Blindsight? I’m assuming you’re referring to the Peter Watts book? Another coworker recommended it to me (he’s met him before). I’ve only just read Starfish but found out that his other books are free to download via Creative Commons license.

  • Justin H

Yep thats what I was talking about. I’ve loved it so far. It keeps enough of its world vague enough that you are interested but not having to be bored out of your mind by hamfisted world building. The tech in it is also really great and has a sense of feasibility to it. I also find the concept of the main character’s profession really fun. I would definitely recommend it.

  • Read the book and thought it was ok, couldn’t really stand the main characters attempts at humour. All of his “witty” comments were just to much.

Way more excited for this, looks like a thrilling ride!

  • Lori Cerny

Anyone BUT Matt Damon, in my opinion.

Actually, it would have been nice for Danny Glover or Denzel Washington to play the lead… someone I would actually root for to survive.

I agree that the humor in the book sounds immature, but the book is meant to be as realistic as possible. If you have been in situations that are dangerous, you might say things that may sound childish. I flew single piloted airplanes in the U.S. Marines and when things get tense in the aircraft, you talk to yourself and a lot of it would sound ridiculous if others were listening.

  • Justin H

Eh, fair enough, that’s a good point. It seemed a bit constant, but I guess making light while scared out of your wits makes sense.
