Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies Trailer Starring Tom Hanks

bridgeofspies

Over the past year or so, I’ve been pretty excited about the prospect of Steven Spielberg taking on a Cold War spy movie, but now that the first trailer has arrived for Bridge of Spies, I have to say, I’m a little disappointed. Here’s the thing: it doesn’t really feel like a spy movie. Whether it is the bright cinematography of Janusz Kaminski, Tom Hanks playing the everyman, or the attempt to put it against a bigger historical backdrop, the movie isn’t exactly what I expected. That being said, it could just be the marketing spin and I’m hoping this doesn’t end up being quite as mediocre as the trailer implies. Bridge of Spies hits theatres on Oct. 16th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.

This looks just as generic as everything Spielberg has been putting out since the late 90s. Not interested.

Trailer didn’t fill me with delight

  • Hmm… when I heard “Spielberg Cold War spy movie with Tom Hanks,” this is not really what I had in mind.

  • ReelJunkie

I agree. Still looking forward to it though.

What is a cold war spy movie supposed to look like? Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy? This looks like another classy Spielberg war drama, like the ones he’s been doing lately. But until all the shooting began it reminded me of Catch Me If You Can more than anything. Doesn’t seem to invent the wheel, but looks good and solid.

Sure, Tinker Tailor is probably the best recent example in terms of look and feel even though ironically I wasn’t a huge fan. Which probably throws my credibility out the window anyway. Probably the biggest thing is that the main character is a negotiator, not a spy. So yeah, maybe I just had the wrong expectations but I don’t think I’m alone.

Keep in mind Sean that most spys weren’t just spys. They would typically have real jobs in the real world and relay back information to agents of the CIA or KGB (the not spys). In saying that, I know what you mean about the look of the film but it’s Spielberg man! Have faith in the beard!
The big question is, will Putin ban this in Russia? I’m predicting yes and any Russian found in possession of a bootleg copy gets a bad case of polonium poisoning.

Just pure me some of that sweet, sweet Kaminski juice.

Spielberg has made the best spy film already as far as I’m concerned: Munich.

  • Stinker

Music by Thomas Newman, let´s see how spielberg does without a John WIlliams Score.

  • I agree Sean. Looks just over wrought somehow. THE DEBT was a decent cold war spy thriller from a couple of years ago that was sort of overlooked (starring Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain, Tom Wilkinson and Cirian Hinds).

I wasn’t as interested until I read written by the Coen brothers. Now I have hope.

    “Inspired by True events”

    Basically “The Cold war happened.

  • MisterQuigley

“The bright cinematography of Kaminiski” lol

Certainly one of the best, and one of Spielbergs all-time best films. But wheras that film had some pro-Israel bias, this trailer makes Bridge of Spies looks awfully propagandistic in its portrayal of the cold war. Typical and boring. That being said, I remember the trailers of Munich being that same back in 2005.

  • scoobydelite

Yeah, thought this was a bad trailer (not a critique at all that I think the film will be bad). The trailer really seemed like a summarization of each successive plot point in the film to the point where I turned it off 2/3’s of the way through so wouldn’t have 90% of the basic story shown.

This is a terrible trailer. Like so many these days, it gives away most of the film. Most inexplicably, the dialogue is either heavy-handed (i.e., exposition like “I’m an insurance lawyer”) or trite, which suggests what’s in store for the remaining two hours. I think Sean’s misgivings are well placed. If this is the best dialogue they could scrape together, that bodes ill for viewers…. Re: the comments about “Munich” — it could have been a great film. It was ruined by politically correct moral equivalence — equating Palestinian terrorists with the Israelis who hunt them down. Such is Hollywood these days. “Tinker, Tailor…” is an outstanding spy film. So is the sadly underrated “Enigma,” directed by Michael Apted.
