Tron 3 No Longer Happening at Disney

Just a couple of months ago, it looked like Disney was finally ready to pull the trigger on a sequel to Tron: Legacy. Both Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde had officially signed on and director Joseph Kosinski was also set to return. Early prep work was underway and the movie was looking to start production in Vancouver later this year. Unfortunately, the project was never actually greenlit and now this week we are hearing that Tron 3 is officially off the grid. The question is why did Disney cancel the project and could they still resurrect it in the near future?
According to THR, Disney has opted not to move forward with Tron 3 for the time being. It’s unclear why they changed their mind but Variety is reporting that they simply could not find a spot for it in their upcoming schedule. Clearly the massive Marvel and Star Wars franchises are starting to squeeze out other possible projects from their pipeline. It’s possible that it could be put back on the table again, but something tells me that the farther we get from Tron: Legacy, the less likely it will be.
Apparently Jared Leto was being pursued for a major role in the film, but they never actually got to the negotiation stage. Either way, it’s still a bit surprising considering that Tron: Legacy made over $400 million worldwide. As you might expect, fans have already started an online petition to get Tron 3 back in development. They are aiming for 15,000 signatures and already have over 12,000. Will this be enough to cause Disney to come around? I have my doubts. What do you think, should Disney reconsider or do you think a third Tron film is unnecessary?
