Dwayne Johnson to Star in Big Trouble in Little China Remake

Just one day after Dwayne Johnson almost single-handedly pulled in $54 million with San Andreas, he has landed a deal to remake one of his own favourite action movies of all time. Johnson will reportedly headline a new version of John Carpenter’s cult classic Big Trouble in Little China, taking on the iconic role of trucker Jack Burton played by Kurt Russell in the original. Burton, of course, finds himself inadvertently pulled into a war in San Fransisco’s Chinatown between two street gangs with ancient, mystical roots. While I’m sure the idea of this remake won’t go over well with some fans, I do think that The Rock is one of the few action stars out there today who might be able to pull it off. According to The Wrap, Dwayne Johnson is currently in negotiations to star in and produce a remake of Big Trouble in Little China. He and his producing partners pitched it to 20th Century Fox, who were apparently receptive to the idea. The screenplay will be written by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class, Thor). No word yet on who might direct, but it seems unlikely that Carpenter will have any involvement.
Big Trouble in Little China is one of the few John Carpenter films that was not already in the process of being remade. New versions of They Live, Christine and Escape From New York were all previously announced although it is unclear if any of them are still in active development. What do you think, are you interested in a new take on Big Trouble or is this just crossing the line?
