Kung Fury Officially Released on YouTube

The ultimate crowdfunded homage to ’80s action movies is finally here. David Sandberg’s tongue-in-cheek Kung Fury has officially been released on YouTube after taking Kickstarter by storm back in December of 2013 where it raised over $630,000. That was quite a bit more than their original goal, although it did not meet their budgetary requirements for a feature-length film. In the end, Sandberg and his crew have delivered a 30 minute short film about a renegade cop who travels back in time to kill Hitler (and yeah, maybe it’s for the best that it wasn’t feature-length). Anyway, the good news is that you can now watch Kung Fury in its entirety on YouTube free of charge; check out the movie after the jump and let us know what you think.

Calling Kung Fury “tongue-in-cheek” is like calling Hitler a petty thief. Completely over the top more likely. I do dig the score, though.

  • Agreed that it was for the best that they didn’t get to expand it to feature length. The best part with Kung Fury was its trailer, and the score.

Saw it live last night. Not very good, some funny lines and ideas and that’s about it. I’m a fan of Mitch Murder so I did enjoy the music and also the Hasselhoff song.

Video game monster is awesome. Sean, make a game of this.

  • ReelJunkie

Really really fun short. I just hope studios don’t capitalize on it and make it a feature film…. we all know how Sucker Punch turned out.

What a struggle it was to get through that one. It’s just a 30 minute FX reel with broad jokes inserted between action scenes, and aimless 80s pandering… I regret contributing to this one.

Sandberg has told swedish press that they’ve already had discussions with studios regarding making it a full length feature.

  • ReelJunkie

Don’t know if I can get through a 90 minutes version of this. Then again, who knows… it might turn out amazing.

With real actors and an actual script rather than a bunch of scenes jumbled together maybe it’d be interesting. Personally I’d drop the dinosaur shit and just focus on the time travel 80s b movie aspect.

The bad news is that you can’t log this one on Letterboxd.

  • Jr

Well I thought that was just great.

  • Todd S. Gallows

Well there’s already one called CoinOp Story… Also a Metroidvania game. Maybe he’s responsible for it. http://www.kamizoto.com/#!coinopstory/chj8

    Hell with it! Logged.

I think I can hear the Letterboxd police sirens in the distance.

  • I enjoyed every second of it.
