First Photos from Ridley Scott’s The Martian Starring Matt Damon

If you loved Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, you’ll be happy to know that we’re getting another Ridley Scott sci-fi movie before the end of this year. On the other hand, if you weren’t a fan of Prometheus, you’ll be happy to know that the movie in question is not a Prometheus sequel. The Martian is based on the self-published novel by Andy Weir and it stars Matt Damon as an astronaut who is stranded on Mars, fighting for his life against the elements. It’s a space survival thriller sort of akin to Gravity (Ridley Scott describes it as a “21st century Robinson Crusoe”) and this week the first photos have surfaced online courtesy of Empire and EW. The Martian hits theatres on Nov. 25th; check out the images after the jump and see what you think.

Looks extremely promising. I encourage anyone interest in this upcoming film to read the book. It’s a great read.

Agreed, the book was a fun, tense read, and the main character narrated with a great sense of humor.

Very excited for this, loved the book. Can’t wait to see what Ridley Scott does with the HAB and rovers etc visually. Judging by Alien and Prometheus it should be good. Love Matt Damon, think he’ll be great but when I was reading it I kept thinking of Joshua Jackson as Mark Watney.

Loved the book as well. Didn’t imagine Matt Damon as the character…kinda wanted a more wise ass type of guy to play the role since there was so much humor between the Mark Whatney and Nasa.. I imagined maybe Gerard Butler, or Tom Hardy or Nathan Fillion or even JGL (But he might be too young though to play Whatney).

Not quite sure if I liked the Production design so far but we’ll see how it pans out on scree,

Hope Ridley can pull this off. His last few movies, Prometheus, Robin Hood, The Cuonselor, Gods and Kings, Kingdom of heaven have not been very good. He’s really been missing the mark lately and I hope he doesn’t miss on this.

I love Ridley alone for giving us Alien, Blade Runner and Thelma and Louise and really think he is definitely one of our greatest directors, but like I said disappointed of late.

Oh oh, Sean is editorializing again :-)

Scott knows his spacesuits. The suits in his film always look interesting and believable. That’s all I can really comment on, haven’t read the book.

  • William Hill

The photos have me intrigued but I’m cautiously optimistic since Scott hasn’t had a good track record lately.

I wonder if ridley scott knows there is a movie called robinson crusoe on mars? He must right?
