Anne Hathaway to Star in Nacho Vigalondo’s Monster Movie Colossal

Although he has plenty of fans within the genre film world, Spanish director Nacho Vigalondo still has yet to deliver the breakout hit that will finally make him a household name. After his 2007 sci-fi mindbender Timecrimes, I thought for sure he was on his way to directing some major blockbusters, but since then he has only offered up a few shorts, a couple of smaller films that mostly went under the radar (Extraterrestrial and Open Windows) and a pair of segments in horror anthology films (The ABCs of Death and VHS: Viral). Now this week we have some interesting news about his next project, which sounds like it could be the big one we’ve been waiting for. The movie is called Colossal and it is described as “Transformers versus Adaptation and Godzilla meets Being John Malkovich” and it now has a major A-list actress attached. The plot synopsis is as follows:
Gloria [is] an ordinary woman who, after losing her job and her fiancé, decides to leave her life in New York to move back to her hometown. But when news reports surface that a giant lizard is destroying the city of Tokyo, Gloria gradually comes to realize that she is strangely connected to these far-off events via the power of her mind. In order to prevent further destruction, Gloria needs to determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.
Clearly this sounds like a unique take on the monster movie genre and Vigalondo calls it his “most ambitious script so far, and probably also the most personal one.” Anne Hathaway has signed on for the lead role, which should help attract plenty of buyers at the Cannes film market this week. The movie is being fully financed by Voltage Pictures. Are you looking forward to Colossal?
