Update: The first trailer for the show has also been released. Check it out below.

With all the TV network upfront presentations happening this week, we’re continuing to get more announcements about which shows have been officially picked up for the fall season. One of the more interesting ones we’ve heard about is a new version of The Muppet Show, which has been talked about ever since Jason Segel rebooted The Muppets on the big screen back in 2011. Just a few days ago it was confirmed that ABC had officially given the show a full series order and that it would be bringing The Muppets back to primetime. What’s surprising is that this won’t be a variety show like the original series that aired in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Instead it is said to be a mockumentary in the vein of The Office and a more adult-oriented show… for kids of all ages, that is.

The new version of The Muppets is said to be a single camera dramedy that explores the the relationships and personal lives of the characters, both at home and at work. That includes their “romances, break-ups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires.” I’m not entirely sure what a show like this will look like but the pilot supposedly received a standing ovation when it screened for ABC execs last month. The show is being written and produced by Bill Prady (The Big Bang Theory) and Bob Kushell (Anger Management).

The show is one of three new comedies picked up by ABC, along with Dr. Ken, a semi-autobiographical sitcom starring Ken Jeong, and The Real O’Neals, executive produced by Dan Savage. I am a bit confused about the idea of taking a more “adult” approach to The Muppets, especially since the original show didn’t really dumb things down for kids. Either way, it will be interesting to see if they still bring in guest stars. Are you looking forward to a new Muppets TV show?

What’s funny is this looks kinda like 30Rock, which in it of itself was a lot like The Muppet Show. Art imitating art imitating art.
