Film Junk Poll: What is the Best Comic Book Movie?

With the continued explosion of comic book movies over the past decade or so, every major release seems to invite a direct comparison to what has come before. Each year fans are all too eager to crown a new king, so I thought it might be a good time to revisit the subject and see where the current consensus is at. I found it surprisingly hard to come up with a reasonably sized list of potential favourites thanks to all the endless sequels, but hopefully we have most of the important ones on here. I have also included some movies from outside of the superhero genre as well just to give some variety. So what do you think is the best comic book movie ever made? Cast your vote in this week’s poll and then sound off in the comments below.

    Days of Future Past??

  • Kasper

The Film Junk audience sure does love Nolan.

  • Indianamcclain

I voted for The Dark Knight, but I also love Batman 89.

  • devolutionary

Totally forgot that Road to Perdition was originally a graphic novel. Very subjective question but I voted on Dredd being the best comic book representation. Sin City might be close too. There’s better movies on the list, but I tend to forget about the “comic book” element in them while watching.

  • Anthony

Yeah or we just know that The Dark Knight is the best comic book movie of all time, regardless of its director.

  • Lisa Naarseth Myklebust

Hellboy is on the list, but not Hellboy 2?

    And where is Unbreakable?

    Good job!

  • Lisa Naarseth Myklebust

It’s also a disgusting fascist film (as is TDKR).

  • Flo Lieb

It so clearly is Spider-Man 2. No doubt about it.

  • RockJoker

Where the fuck is Batman Returns i wanted to vote for it…

  • Niklas

.. is not even in the running for top 10

  • Tim

Yeah Sean, where is “Batman Returns”?!??It´s way superior, cause Burton openly hated the idea of another comic book movie and was bored by dull superhero stories, so he was allowed by the studio to film his very own vision.

  • Kenneth Serenyi

It looks like the Marvel Studio vote is going to be split and TDK will take the prize. Sure the list is missing some good movies but they probably wouldn’t stand a chance anyway.

  • LordAwesome

Anyone who didn’t vote for BATMAN 1966 is an asshole. With bad taste.

  • Spider-Man 2 is still the high watermark for me. Love the Dark Knight but it doesn’t feel like a comic book movie.

  • Deacon Frost

I didn’t even think of “Oldboy,” but that’s a good choice. I’m sure there are some other good manga adaptations that could be here, like “Lone Wolf and Cub,” which actually served as an inspiration for “Road to Perdition.”

“Blade 2″ would probably be my pick for the poll. That action sequence in the club trounces anything I’ve seen from the comic book movies of recent years. Guillermo del Toro was a perfect fit for that kind of material.

  • parapa

    Blade 2, not even close

  • Dstrbpx

“doesn’t feel like a comic book movie” <== easy win for me

  • 9No

The Dark Knight by far, because it transcends the comic movie genre and is just a very good movie on its own. It’s a cliché answer, but it has become a cliché for a reason. :)

  • Impiii

    Mystery Men ….. *mic drop*

  • Lori Cerny

I forgot about “Oldboy” and would have voted for it, too.

Went for Kick-Ass, but it’s really a draw between Kick-Ass and Spider-Man 2 for me. Hellboy close in behind.

Can’t believe how highly people rate Winter Soldier. The Dark Knight is over rated as well for me, it’s a great film but not as good as most people would have it. Prefer Batman Returns and actually The Dark Knight Rises as well over it.

  • pcch7

Best comic book movie of 2014.

  • Dooobie

    Danger: Diabolik, of course.

  • Jr

Totally. I think The Avengers might be the best representation of a comic book in a movie but The Dark Knight is is the best movie on this list.

  • Xidor

You should do this kind of poll to see what Premium Podcasts people are interested in.

What about Edge of Tomorrow/Live Die Repeat/All You Need is Kill? As far as I can tell, there are no non-western comics on here, so no need to add more to an already huge list.

  • Justin H

I voted for Dredd. Thought it was fun and felt like the little bits I’ve read of the comics. You don’t really like Dredd and he makes you kinda queasy with his brutality.

I do find it weird that we have Ghost World up there with The Avengers just because they are both based on comics. Not to say one is “better” in any way, I just think “comic book movie” is so broad…a superhero movie is a superhero movie but other stuff feels more like an adaptation of any piece of fiction. Also doesn’t help that the cape movies are usually a mixture of different story lines along with invented beats for the films, while something like Road to Perdition and Ghost World more or less follow the story from the book.

  • Kenneth Serenyi

Winter Soldier is my favorite and I’m glad the directors are moving on to future marvel studio films. I really enjoyed Dark Knight, but it has gone down for me with repeat viewings. Spider-man 2 is high on my list as well.

  • BatemanBegins

I’ll be the asshole that brings up Tank Girl.

  • Patrick Batman

Sean, you really fucked the dog on this one. 30 options and you ignore a number of the most popular, and widely agreed upon “best” comic book films for options like Road to Perdition and Man of Steel? You’re a fool, a god damn fool. Your dad mentality has left your brain weak and unreliable.
