Cube Remake in the Works

Back in 1997, Canadian filmmaker Vincenzo Natali kickstarted his career with a low budget sci-fi thriller called Cube. The series soon continued on without him, spawning a sequel and a prequel while he went off and did his own thing including movies like Cypher, Splice, Haunter and the still-in-development adaptation of William Gibson’s cyberpunk classic Neuromancer. Now almost 20 years later, Cube is coming back around again. Lionsgate is about to remake the film with the help of screenwriter Jon Spaihts (Prometheus), but it appears that Natali will not be involved.
According to THR, Roy Lee and Jon Spaihts are producing Cubed for Lionsgate, a re-imagining of Vincenzo Natali’s Cube. The movie will be directed by Saman Kesh, who also did a short film called Controller which is now being turned into a feature film at Fox. Philip Gawthorne (Modern Life Is Rubbish) will pen the script.
It’s easy to see why Lionsgate might be interested in this since it has a slightly similar premise to the Saw series which proved quite fruitful for them over the past decade. The original film revolved around seven strangers who found themselves locked inside a mysterious maze full of booby-trapped cubical rooms. The new version is being described as “sci-fi survival thriller about artificial intelligence, humanity and the birth of a new ‘digital’ race.” Do you think a Cube remake could have potential?
