First Official Photo of Jared Leto as The Joker in Suicide Squad

killingjoke

When it was first announced that Jared Leto had landed the role of The Joker in David Ayer’s upcoming Suicide Squad movie, it didn’t really fill me with confidence, but the general reaction seemed mostly positive… possibly because he was coming off an Academy Award for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club. Now this week David Ayer has officially unveiled Leto’s new look in celebration of The Joker’s 75th Anniversary and it looks every bit as ridiculous as you might expect.

They are clearly drawing from Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke, but this just seems like such a “cool” rock and roll version of the character that it’s almost an insult. But who knows, maybe this is just a publicity photo with some artistic liberties being taken. Maybe he won’t actually have tattoos that say “Ha Ha Ha” all over his body… right? Suicide Squad hits theatres on Aug. 5th, 2016; check out the photo after the jump along with another previously released image and let us know what you think.

He looks like Ninja from Die Antwoord.

  • Kasper

I didn’t know the new Joker was played by 2001’s Marilyn Manson.

  • Henrik

An insult to who? Sean, father of two, feels insulted, are you kidding me?

  • Henrik

one can only dream of the day where a decision is made by considering the artform, and not the clickbaiting bloggers, whom nobody wants to hear screaming… for pussy and safety

  • Henrik

The Brian Bolland illustration is so iconic it makes your point for you Sean… If you really want to see a Brian Bolland-esque version of the joker, I highly recommend the Brian Bolland illustrated ‘The Killing Joke’ which was already raped in a petty, pathetic way by the “fucking” Nolan brothers, who hate writing… And coming up with narrative ideas

  • InspectorSpaceTime

Well Aquaman is being played by Rob Zombie…

  • Sean

I don’t want my kids growing up in a world where The Joker has a grill!!!

  • Glendon

I can’t believe someone thought having the word “damaged” tattooed across the forehead was a good idea.

  • ReelJunkie

Something tells me this isn’t the final version. Didn’t they describe this Joker to be majestic or something? Well, this seems like the exact opposite of that.

  • Deven Science

On the one hand, this screams of glam movie villain, particularly the “haha” prison tattoos. Would a psychopath really tattoo “HAHA” all over himself? Hmm. If he’s self-aware of his image and reputation, maybe. Still, it seems very like a movie villain, and not a real-world, gritty one. Still, maybe they’re going for that? Who says this movie is all gritty real? Maybe it’s a more realistic version of Batman ’66.

In any case, I see the need to try something very different. You are in the shadow of an Oscar winning Joker performance, so you need to distance your Joker from that, and not be seen as copying. I think it will hinge on his performance. Throw in some Junior from Panic Room, mixed with the willingness to do what needs to be done of, well, Raoul from Panic Room (sorry, just watched Panic Room), and it might work.

  • the GOD DAMN Batman!

    Mentality

  • Glen

I always thought Adrian Brody would have made a pretty good Brian Bolland-esque Joker

  • kyri

maybe his mojo will be, “hey babe,do you know how I got my grill?” or

“hey babe, you wanna know why I got ma j tat?”

  • kyri

“I took it straight out of a comic book that is dedicated to me” That’s right babe. I got my own comics

  • kyri

    J means Hope.

  • Bandit Manatee

We can only hope that he will be wearing a shirt for most of the movie.

  • CyEd

I don’t mind Tattoos as long as they mean something like Jokers scars in TDK, But these tattoos are what a fan or goon of the Joker would get. It would be cooler if the tattoos were something he’s obsessed with like bats or something mysterious from his past.

  • Brendan

He looks like Golem. Even more than Sean does!

  • Jonny Ashley

My immediate reaction was wipe that shit off with a kleenex, but I kind of like the idea of his character bending to the theme of the movie as a whole. I think there’s already enough rigidly faithful supervillains, and in the case of a supervillain team-up, I don’t mind this direction. curious to see the rest of the squad.

  • LordAwesome

David Ayers has truly awful taste in everything.

  • Having tattoos all over your body of HAHAs, large grins and a skull wearing a joker cap just looks so much like a teenager making a halloween costume. Just not knowing when to stop adding stuff.

  • This is so fucking good. Hats off to you.

  • JonnyAshley
  • Flo Lieb

So that’s the reason why he wears that Batsuit…

  • The only way I could endorse Hahahahaha all over his body is if he cut it into his skin and left scars.

  • Jr

That just looks ridiculous. It might not get as much of a negative reaction if it were 1993 though.

HAPPY 75th BIRTHDAY, JOKER! Here’s a picture from what will be remembered as the worst and most core of character missing interpretations of you ever! *spits in jokers face*

  • theo

That’s exactly what everyone said about Ledger at first

  • Xidor

There’s a picture of Leto showing someone his phone with himself as the joker. There are no tatoos on his face in the unintentionally leaked photo. I think Ayer was celebrating the 75th anniversary by getting a rouse out of everyone.

  • Xidor

I was wrong. The tatoos are real. Some images from the set were taken yesterday and you can see the same tatoos as the image above.
