Phil Lord and Chris Miller Confirmed for Animated Spider-Man Movie

It’s no secret that Phil Lord and Chris Miller are in high demand for just about every new project happening in Hollywood right now. They are already writing The Lego Movie Sequel and producing the other Lego spin-offs, plus they are developing 23 Jump Street and they were also recently hired to write the treatment for The Flash movie. Now Sony has come out and confirmed another Lord / Miller project that was originally revealed as a possibility as part of the Sony hack late last year: a feature-length animated Spider-Man movie. Hit the jump to find out what we know (which admittedly isn’t much).

At CinemaCon earlier today, Tom Rothman, chairman of the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, announced that Phil Lord and Chris Miller would be overseeing a brand new Spider-Man movie that would exist independently of the Spider-Man live action universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will be an animated movie that takes Spidey “back to his graphic roots”, although it is unclear if it will be 2D or 3D. Lord and Miller will write the treatment and produce the film, but it looks like they probably won’t direct.

The other big question that remains unanswered here is whether or not this will be a comedy. I can’t help but think this is a response to The Lego Batman Movie that Lord and Miller are also involved in, but without the Lego brand behind it, will it be as successful? It’s hard to say. The movie is still untitled but it will hit theatres on July 20th, 2018. Do you have any interest in an animated Spider-Man movie?
