Star Trek 3 Official Title Possibly Revealed

As everyone is finally starting to come down from the whirlwind of announcements at Star Wars Celebration, this week we’ve got some new information regarding that other big movie franchise with “Star” in the title. That’s right Trek fans, we have it on pretty good authority that the title of the next Star Trek movie has been revealed and it hints at a possible return to some of the themes explored by the original TV show and movies. But will it be enough to win back all the old school fans who feel that J.J. Abrams betrayed the prime directive by turning Star Trek into a mindless action franchise?

According to Trek Movie, Paramount and Bad Robot recently registered the title Star Trek Beyond with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which is a pretty good indication that it will be the name of the next film. It also seems to coincide with some of the things that screenwriter and star Simon Pegg said in an interview with Comic Book Resources about bringing the series back to its roots:

“I think we just want to take it forward with the spirit of the TV show. And it’s a story about frontierism and adventure and optimism and fun, and that’s where we want to take it, you know. Where no man has gone before – where no one has gone before, sensibly corrected for a slighter more enlightened generation. But yeah, that’s the mood at the moment.”

Of course, J.J. Abrams is known for keeping secrets and it’s possible that this is just a red herring of some sort. It could also be related to a video game or TV property currently being developed… to be honest, my initial reaction is that it doesn’t really sound like a movie title. But either way, the direction that Simon Pegg seems to be taking with the new movie sounds very promising indeed. What do you think of the rumoured title for Star Trek 3?

Darn, I was hoping they’d approve my title: Keep on Star Trekkin’

I’ve seen all of the films, and they are all excactly this. They’re all B-films of varying degrees (WOK being the most obvious one), which is why the best film is the one that is basically a satire, The Voyage Home. Even the old TV-show, of which I have watched a few episodes (those recommended as the best), are honestly very simple-minded and soap opera-ish. They had little action simply because of lack of resources; otherwise it would just be Bonanza in space.

And that was when, 50 years ago? The “old fans” are basically a dying species at this point. There is no way you can please these yoghurt-eating, tube-inhaling waiting-for-that-last-final-stroke-patients on anything at this point. The closest thing to the TV-Show are those fan-made Star Wars films from the early 2000s…

Short and simple. I like it, too.

Completely wrong. It’s strange that you would single out Wrath of Khan, which is certainly not “mindless action,” nor are the other films (at least up until First Contact).

Hopefully it’s ‘Beyond’ plotlines and races we’ve seen countless times at this point… my worry with Simon Pegg at the writing helm is that it will be more referential, less radical
