Gremlins Reboot Gets a Writer

We’ve been hearing rumours about a new Gremlins movie for what seems like forever, but up until now none of these rumours had come from a particularly reliable source. Some of the earlier reports indicated that a possible sequel might happen, but more recently we were hearing that Warner Brothers had decided to go with the more obvious reboot route with Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) being courted to write the script. Then just last year it looked like original screenwriter Chris Columbus had come on board as a producer with Steven Spielberg also giving the project his blessing. Now the project has taken its first real steps toward becoming a reality as Warner Brothers has reportedly hired another writer to set the wheels in motion. Will Gizmo, Stripe and the rest finally return to the big screen?
According to Deadline, Warner Brothers has hired Carl Ellsworth to write the script for a Gremlins remake. There is no word on how close this will hew to the original, but a previous report stated that the movie might be set 30 years after the original. Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg will indeed produce the film, but Columbus supposedly turned down a chance to direct. As far as we know, Joe Dante will not be involved.
Ellsworth most recently wrote the Goosebumps movie for Sony but his previous credits include Disturbia and Wes Craven’s Red Eye. He also penned a couple of other remakes previously with The Last House on the Left and Red Dawn. He seems like a logical choice for the project, albeit somewhat uninspired. Are you interested in a Gremlins reboot and who would you like to see direct?
