Monday Morning Box Office Report: Furious 7 Destroys April Opening Weekend Record

boxofficefurious7

It’s not very often that a film franchise peaks after its fourth or fifth installment much less the seventh, but that is exactly what has happened with the Fast & Furious films. Furious 7 easily topped all of its predecessors with an absolutely monstrous opening weekend, driving straight into the record books as the biggest April debut ever. It earned an estimated $143 million, almost $50 million more than Captain America: The Winter Soldier made last year. That puts it at #9 on the list of all-time best opening weekends ever, and with another $240 million coming from overseas, the movie is probably on pace to crack $1 billion worldwide. Without any other major blockbusters planned for the next few weeks, the movie should essentially have free reign over the month of April and when all is said and done, it could end up being one of the biggest movies of all time. Who ever would have thought an underground street racing movie with Vin Diesel could lead to all this?

1. Furious 7 — $143.62M
2. Home — $27.4M
3. Get Hard — $12.93M
4. Cinderella — $10.29M
5. Insurgent — $10M

7. Woman in Gold — $2M
8. Kingsman: The Secret Service — $1.7M

Too many mouth-breathers at the cinema so I visited the two-dollar show to take in the supremely erudite Jupiter Ascending. I prefer my explosions on other planets. Thanks.

yea, i bet people won’t talk crap about age of ultra which has about half the heart of this movie and finding a way to make the movie with out one of its stars is an achievement in film making.

My theater was quite foggy with breath.

I haven’t seen all of the Fast & Furious movies, but it seems like the series picked up momentum when they decided to make this a blockbuster franchise. That plus no other big releases and Paul Walker’s death all contributed to this perfect shit storm.
