David Lynch No Longer Involved with Twin Peaks Sequel

Sometimes when things sound too good to be true, they actually are. Everyone was astonished last year when Showtime announced that they were bringing back Twin Peaks for a brand new nine episode season with original series creators David Lynch and Mark Frost taking the helm creatively. Unfortunately, this week it appears that Lynch has decided to walk away from the project for budgetary reasons. The project still seems to be moving forward, but without David Lynch will it still be Twin Peaks? This is what he had to say about the matter on his Facebook page yesterday:
“Dear Facebook Friends, Showtime did not pull the plug on Twin Peaks. After 1 year and 4 months of negotiations, I left because not enough money was offered to do the script the way I felt it needed to be done. This weekend I started to call actors to let them know I would not be directing. Twin Peaks may still be very much alive at Showtime. I love the world of Twin Peaks and wish things could have worked out differently.”
Showtime has since responded with the following statement:
“We were saddened to read David Lynch’s statement today since we believed we were working towards solutions with David and his reps on the few remaining deal points. Showtime also loves the world of Twin Peaks and we continue to hold out hope that we can bring it back in all its glory with both of its extraordinary creators, David Lynch and Mark Frost, at its helm.”
It would seem that they are still open to negotiation but it is unclear if Lynch feels the same way. It’s quite possible that he is just using social media to give himself some extra leverage here. On the other hand, the scripts have supposedly already been written by Lynch and Frost so at least he will have some influence on the final product even if he doesn’t direct. What do you think, does this change your level of excitement for the new season of Twin Peaks?
