The Movie Review Show Bonus Episode: VHS Buyer’s Guide

Since we didn’t record a regular episode of the Film Junk Podcast this week we decided to dig into a stack of old unlabelled cassette tapes that we recently stumbled across in Sean’s basement. As we had hoped, one of the tapes contained another episode of The Movie Review Show, a pre-internet version of our podcast that dates all the way back to the early ’90s! In this bonus episode, we discuss our VHS collections and the best way to organize them, plus we offer up some bargain hunting tips and debate whether it is better to rent or own movies. As always, we apologize in advance for the poor sound quality. Enjoy!

    Damn..only 1 hour!

1993? So they’re almost 2 yrs older, but sound 5 yrs younger lol

  • I love you guys. April 1st is better than Christmas.

  • Jenny Lane

Hey Sean, My HTC desire phone doesn’t show the whole website, it’s just in text form. (before you point out the obvious, there is no mobile website switch button down the bottom for me to click, just blue text) any ideas would be appreciated. Love you guys.

  • Stinker

Were is the creepy old asian Trekkie, who owns more VHS than GOD? Always that he was the Doc Brown to Sean´s Marty.

  • Arnold Schizopolis

I’d love to hear Frank’s Desert Storm poem about “George W. Bush”. lol

  • Arnold Schizopolis

A 35 yr old Reed hangin with 13-14 yr olds…eeek.

  • Thank you for ‘unearthing’ these gems, you must do a lot of spring cleaning in late March! Let’s hope it continues…

This one really made me miss the video stores of my youth, musty carpet, finding the right store to rent the R rated stuff and unrated ones like ‘Faces of Death’… Damn digital. Thankfully here in Portland we still have 2 great rental stores that will probably never shut down until the owners die, and even then someone will probably take over.

  • Oh my god, YES!!!

  • Bob

I haven’t listened to this episode yet.
I want to say that the Prince of Thieves episode was the most enjoyable podcast ever, glorious entertainment from start to finish.

  • Captain Morgan

  • Derek

This is, by far, my favorite annual event. You guys are the best.

  • Sean

Did this just start happening or was it always a problem? Nothing has changed on the site recently that I can think of.

  • Colin

Amazing, simply amazing… you guys are the best.

  • Rob

Oh geez this is fricken incredible.

I’m now halfway convinced all of FilmJunk is just an act, Sean Frank and Jay project their personalities into this totally outrageous conversation so perfectly. This made my podcasting week. Thanks guys.

  • Jr

    April Fools!

Sean’s tape player must be busted, sounds like it’s playing back things pitched just a tad too high. Yet another reason why tape-based media is garbage.

  • Colin

If you’re using the HTC browser, click the three dots in the top right corner and check “Desktop View.” If you’re using Chrome, click the three dots in the top right corner and check “Request desktop site”

I use an HTC One M7 w/ 5.0.2, but it should be the same on other HTCs with older versions of Android.

  • Sean Pontow

I noticed Jay’s incredible singing appears in the latter half of this episode, which presumably is another April Fool’s joke podcast. Funny shit today!

  • DannyD

Thanks guys! This was funny as hell

  • Essie

Thank you guys so much, seriously you work too hard for your fans. This will make my week!

  • Thurston

Yet another reason why Film Junk is my #1 podcast. Glorious. I love you guys!

  • Jesse Bajenaru

I was hoping you would do this again. You guys did not disappoint! Thank you.

  • milath

Hysterical once again. You little dudes are all right. Though I still bet none of you have mustaches though. Maybe one day you’ll be cool enough for that. Sounds like Jay might be, eventually.

P.S. Also, Jay is totally right about the black bars. He gets to see *all* the boobs.

  • Jameson

    I wish I had a laser dick.

  • Kasper

I lost it at the same point as little Frank. That was fucking hilarious.

  • Jr

Wow. This is one of the greatest things that I have ever put into my ears.

  • Long Tran

It’d be hilarious to see how they would integrate Reed into one of these episodes.

  • MisterQuigley

I love you guys. And Frank also. Thanks for this – instant classic!

  • Derek

Laughed out loud at lil’ Jay telling lil’ Frank he was going to shoot a laser from his laser dick into his mouth.

  • Strybeck

1993 and no Kim Campbell references. A peach with power.

  • Strybeck

My family stood by Beta for quite a while in the 80’s and early 90’s. It actually was better picture quality, and yes, smaller tapes. Those fluffy VHS Disney tapes were such wastes of space!

  • Xidor

When did you guys hit puberty? Is there a lost tape that just has Frank with a high pitched voice?

  • Kinseyharihari

Lol yeah this sounds like the junior high edition of Filmjunk…it’s actually pretty darn funny

  • But when my step-dad got drunk, took a wild swing at me and missed, then knocking all the Disney VHS off the shelf, we were praising the poofy cases.
