New Pee-Wee Herman Movie Coming to Netflix

It’s been a few years now since it was first announced that Pee-wee Herman was staging a comeback and that a new Pee-wee movie was in development with Judd Apatow on board as a producer. While it was starting to feel like maybe this was all just wishful thinking on the part of Paul Reubens, this week we finally have an update on the project. The movie will be called Pee-wee’s Big Holiday and it is set to debut exclusively on Netflix. The project was previously in development at Universal, but this does seem like a better fit than going with a full theatrical release. Paul Reubens had this to say about the announcement:
“Judd and I dreamt up this movie four years ago. The world was much different back then— Netflix was waiting by the mailbox for red envelopes to arrive. I’ve changed all that. The future is here. Get used to it. Bowtie is the new black.”
Did he just single-handedly take credit for Netflix debuting their instant streaming service? The movie will be directed by John Lee (Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer) from a script written by Reubens and Paul Rust (Arrested Development, Comedy Bang! Bang!). Normally I’d be worried about bringing back a character 20 years later, but the revival of his Broadway show turned out better than expected. Production is set to begin early this year and although no release date is set, it seems safe to assume that they are hoping to have it ready in time for Christmas. Are you looking forward to a new Pee-wee Herman adventure?
