We’ve got some sad news to report this weekend from the world of non-fiction filmmaking. Bruce Sinofsky, best known as one half of the directing duo behind the Paradise Lost trilogy, has reportedly passed away this weekend due to complications from diabetes. Together with his collaborator Joe Berlinger, he helped fight for the release of the West Memphis Three and he also directed such films as Brother’s Keeper and Metallica: Some Kind of Monster. Their final film together, Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory, was nominated for an Academy Award. Berlinger had this to say about the passing of his friend:

“The extraordinary adventures we had on the road and the deeply stimulating experiences we had in the editing room were life-changing for all of us who knew him thanks to his wisdom and fervor to change the world… Bruce’s humanity is on every frame of the films that he leaves behind, and words can’t express how graced I feel my life has been by having the extraordinary opportunity of being able to say we were partners and, more importantly, best friends.”

In addition to his groundbreaking work with Joe Berlinger, Bruce Sinofsky also directed the documentary series San Quentin Film School and several episodes of the Sundance Channel series Iconoclasts. He was 58 years old.

Man..life is short. He probably put an imprint on many filmmakers lives, Jay C included, when it comes to documentaries and film-making in general. 58.. I’m 33.. the clock is ticking. got to get moving. Hope they mention him at the Oscars tomorrow. RIP Bruce.
