For whatever reason, Oscar weekend rarely seems to be accompanied by any particularly worthwhile new movies in theatres and it seems like this year is no different. The biggest new release is Hot Tub Time Machine 2, a sequel to the 2010 R-rated comedy that appears to be getting raked across the coals by critics, while the other two movies in wide release are the high school comedy The DUFF and the Kevin Costner sports drama McFarland, USA (or as it’s called in Canada, McFarland). In select theatres, we have the Oscar-nominated Spanish film Wild Tales plus Adam Green’s faux horror documentary Digging Up the Marrow and Mexican pop star biopic Gloria (not to be confused with the Chilean film of the same name).
